I don’t trust my colleagues

I don’t trust my colleagues; most people at work will throw you under the bus in favour of themselves. Don’t get me wrong, I’m kind and chatty at work, but I keep personal details to myself and make sure that the only person I’m accountable for is me.

I mentioned this to a friend, and she looked absolutely horrified, and said “you can’t think like that!” It got me wondering - AIBU in my view, or do others feel the same way?

I don't feel like that anymore. I work in a really healthy positive environment we all support each other work together brilliantly.
However, I've previously worked in toxic environments where it was everyone out for themselves.
I couldn't trust anyone with anything and they would put you down to make themselves look better.
Maybe your friend has just been lucky at work so far.

It very much depends on the people and the company.

This. I work in a tiny team for a charity and I honestly trust all of them, which makes for a much nicer working environment.

Don't trust anyone at work, ever

No matter how twee and nice they seem

Did your friend give you a reason for you not being allowed to have your own mind at work??

"You can't think like that" - why the heck not?!

She didn’t really give a reason, just seemed genuinely shocked by my outlook. I think she might have more of an idealistic view of work relationships, where colleagues are meant to support each other, but in my experience, it’s safer to keep things professional and not get too personal. I was surprised by how strongly she reacted though!

I work in a very toxic environment. Bloody love love love my job and the place I work but not sure how much longer I can cope with the fuckers I work with. I think it’s quite common tbh.

twee and nice

That’s a pairing of adjectives that says a lot about you.

I think it’s sensible to not over-share in the early days of a new job or with new colleagues.

I also think it would be miserable to never let your guard down with those colleagues who show themselves to be allies.
