Am I’m being stupid

Unable to sleep due to a work meeting tomorrow.
I have lost some of my hair and am wearing a wig, I’m so anxious about walking into a room of a dozen people that work in different areas to me. I hate the thought of them noticing and staring.
am I being stupid feeling like this

I wear a wig OP because I suffer from a form of alopecia.

I totally understand you feeling self conscious and wondering about what other people with think. That's how I feel.

But. In almost ten years of having to wear a wig not one person has said anything to me or even hinted to me, that they have noticed I'm wearing a wig. I'm sure some people will have realised but I'm also sure many people have not realised.

Just think how you would be feeling if you were having to go to your meeting with your hair loss and no wig to wear. You would be finding the prospect of that terrifying. Hair loss for women is quite a soul destroying thing.

But you have your wig and you will look great.

Awww lovely! Is it just the "wee small hours" worry getting to you?
I started losing my hair in my 20s, when I was pregnant, and the midwife said "oh it'll grow back" but it never did, and I was so self conscious about the thin/balding spot on top of my head!
But, nobody ever mentioned it!
And realistically, at work, even if you walked in with a monk's tonsure, or totally bald, would anyone comment? It's a professional environment, so people will be thinking about their work!
Your wig will look fine, honestly! You have got this!

I was watching an actress talk about her breast cancer the other day. She said to the camera/her fans, "as I'm sure you'll have noticed, I'm wearing a wig."

Umm, I hadn't actually noticed at all!
Admittedly I'm not very observant with this stuff. But I was too in awe of her to care!

Just go in and be your best professional self and it will be ok x

Would it help to think from the point of view if you were someone else at that meeting.

If you had even noticed, how would you have reacted?

You'll be great Flowers

JMSA · 16/09/2024 01:39

Oh and let us know how it goes!
I think sometimes it helps if you have people who care to report back to Smile

MaggieBsBoat · 16/09/2024 01:57

You will look fabulous.
I promise.
The fear is understandable, but that’s what happens to our minds in the middle of the night.
I used to wear a scarf because at the time I couldn’t afford a decent wig, and now when I look back I am proud of myself.
You’ve got this!

You’ll look as if you’ve just been to the hair salon and had a great cut and colour, presumably you picked one that’s flattering, and really suits your face shape. The quality of even lower cost wigs is fantastic nowadays and honestly look far better than natural hair in many instances.

A couple of women based in the same building as me wore them following illness and they looked fab, just like a great hair day, I honestly would never have known they were wigs if they hadn’t mentioned it, and hadn’t even pinpointed it was their hair making them look better, just thought their health had improved.

No-one will be staring unless they have a passing thought that you’re looking good because you’ve been to the hairdresser’s. TBH they’ll be more focussed on themselves and the work. Try to forget it's a wig and think of it as your (improved) hair. Go have a great meeting. xx

I can never tell if somebody is wearing a wig or not. They're so natural these days. I can't imagine anyone noticing--good luck!

Stirmish · 16/09/2024 03:11

I doubt anyone will notice but even if they do we live in more enlightened times so people will wonder why you need to wear one and know it'll be for good reason and then just move on to other thoughts

Stressedgiraffe · 16/09/2024 05:44

No-one will notice. Or if they do they'll think nice wig and move on.
I had a double mastectomy and am flat as I don't wear prosthesis. No one says anything. I've changed jobs and still noone says anything.
You'll be fine, you got this!

Lovemycat21 · 16/09/2024 17:32

Thanks for all the lovely messages
You were all right, today was fine and no one seemed to notice xx
