Marking group WhatsApp messages as unread

NotToGiveTheGameAway · 15/09/2024 20:50

I read a couple of messages on a group chat WhatsApp earlier on. I don’t want the other person who sent it to show I have read it. I have marked it as unread but does any know know if that really works on group WhatsApp please? Thank you.

It only marks it unread for you, it doesn’t undo any read receipts. You need to turn off read receipts which will apply in future.

Onabench · 15/09/2024 20:54

No. It will only show as unread to you, like a reminder to go back and reread later. It will still be marked as read to the other user

Thank you both! I did wonder if that was the case! Nevermind!

There's no way to take back the read status for them unfortunately. Hope it doesn't cause you too much drama!

Foodfrezy · 15/09/2024 20:56

if you’re in a group chat, read receipts will
be on for the group chat, even if they’re turned off in your settings.

That’s good to know! Life was easier maybe pre WhatsApp!

I've stopped caring if people can see I've read their messages.

I will answer in my own time.

People have a right to their own boundaries.

WhatMe123 · 15/09/2024 21:28

You know it's still marked as read by the other person, just un read your end

NewName24 · 15/09/2024 22:04

Ooh.
Can someone tell me how to make it 'unread' please?
It would be really useful sometimes to have it marked so I remember to go back to a message later.
