Would you file your nails on someone else's sofa?

MoonAndStarsAndSky · 15/09/2024 20:16

When MIL comes over she files her nails and her elder sister's nails sitting on my sofa in our carpeted front room. It really grosses me out because I imagine the nail residue going onto my sofa and carpet and I think it's rude. It wouldn't cross my mind to do that in someone else's home - it's a step away from clipping your nails onto someone else's floor but at least with that I suppose you could pick up the clippings!

I haven't said anything to her because she is very sensitive and plays the victim over everything so I try to keep things as light as possible.

Am I being incredibly precious or would this bother you?

Eeew, no.
Even at home I do mine in the garden.

CherryValley5 · 15/09/2024 20:17

Incredibly precious. Do you also get offended at the nail salon?

They’re your own nails, not toxic waste.

MN never fails to amaze.

JacquelineShit · 15/09/2024 20:18

Yeah I would, especially with family.

I don't think in all my 55 years I've managed to get nail dust on the furniture or the carpet anywhere?

MoonAndStarsAndSky · 15/09/2024 20:19

I wouldn't get offended at a nail salon no, nor would I shave my head in someone's home but I might have it done in a hair salon.

If this isn't a wind up, you've got a problem.

Is that you Brittney?

OMGsamesame · 15/09/2024 20:20

Nope. I do mine over the sink or, at a pinch, over a blanket of tissue paper

Itiswhysofew · 15/09/2024 20:20

YANBU. That's gross. I have to file my nails several times a week, (they grow like crazy), and I would not do it on/in someone else's property.

Don't put up with it.

poppyzbrite4 · 15/09/2024 20:21

So your MIL and her sister come to your house for a cup of tea then take off their shoes and start filing their nails?

I would assume something was very wrong and be concerned. What does your husband say? Does he wait his turn?

You do realise that humans are shedding millions of dead skin particles, hairs etc per day? A tiny bit of nail dust is the least of your issues. Nail clippings I would draw a line at, but that’s it.

MouseofCommons · 15/09/2024 20:23

Why would I want dust in my house when I can walk 10ft to my back door, sit on a bench and do my nails in broad daylight 🤷‍♀️.

Trallers · 15/09/2024 20:24

Just fingers or feet too? I would find toenails absolutely beyond rank and fingers annoying that she never asked if I minded. I'd probably direct to a counter or table that could be wiped down afterwards.

MoonAndStarsAndSky · 15/09/2024 20:24

Not their toenails their fingernails. They come about once a month and MIL will sit in our smarter room filing her nails then take her sisters hand and do hers as well, every single time without fail. I thought it was really rude and honestly thought she was doing it to wind me up as couldn't imagine anyone being ok with this but it seems a lot of people wouldn't mind. FWIW MIL is very fastidious in her own home and gets incredibly upset if someone goes in with shoes on etc. so isn't generally a laid back person.

Edited

She didn't specify if it was fingernails or toenails.

ODFOx · 15/09/2024 20:31

I'd just offer them a coffee table with bowls of warm soap water and chuck a towel over their knees.
I wouldn't like it ( and don't know anyone who would do this) but I'm all for guest comfort so if she's comfortable enough to perform personal hygiene tasks for herself and other family members in your home she is clearly comfortable.
Look on the bright side: nails are a bit grim but she isn't flossing or trimming her foof!!!

maudelovesharold · 15/09/2024 20:40

You are being precious, op, but then so am I, and would get the hoover out as soon as they left!

Where do you think the dust from filing your nails goes, just out of interest?

poppyzbrite4 · 15/09/2024 20:43

DietrichandDiMaggio · 15/09/2024 20:25

She didn't specify if it was fingernails or toenails.

For some reason I read it as toenails and thought they were bonkers.

But to answer the question, I still find it a weird thing for a guest to do. I cannot stand the sound either! I would ask them to stop.

JC03745 · 15/09/2024 20:46

I will 1 up you OP! My MIL picks scabs off her arms/legs, and any rough skin off her feet and eats in when she thinks we aren't looking! 😱

I wouldn't think the dust or whatever was a problem, but if they only visit once a month, it's a bit of a weird choice of activity.

JC03745 · 15/09/2024 20:53

When they've done their weird ritual, get out a hand held vacuum and make a point of cleaning up all the dust. Have you ever asked them WHY they feel the need to do that at YOUR house? Do they do it at other relatives homes? So bizarre.

Katspin · 15/09/2024 20:59

I think that's incredibly gross. I can't stand it when people file or clip their nails on public transport, either. Sounds very strange that she does it every time she visits - surely it's easier to just do it once or twice a week at home.

Missflowerpots · 15/09/2024 21:11

MN is very odd.
