More than 700 Nigerian nurses taking part in qualifications fraud could be working in the NHS

And to think the NMC needs to be more rigorous when accepting registrants onto their register.

So you think, based on what?

NC for this - judging by many of the people I work with I think you may be right. I don’t think it’s confined to one country or continent either.

Seems like they are qualified nurses in Nigeria but have been rejected as nurses here after failing checks, but can work as health care assistants.

'However, these individuals, who are qualified nurses and midwives in their home country, are reportedly still working in the NHS or care homes as healthcare assistants, which can involve performing health checks, taking blood samples and sterilising equipment.'

It's very worrying. Proper checks should be made on qualifications and/or a competence test on first post in UK hospital.

They have been rejected as nurses here!

So they are working as healthcare assistants and careworkers? You don’t need any qualifications for those roles.

Flatulence · 11/09/2024 16:13

I'm a bit confused. If they're working as care workers or HCAs then surely they won't be on the NMC register anyway. HCAs and care workers don't need any particular qualifications to enter those roles. And if they attempted to join the NMC register, but were rejected, then the NMC checks seem to be working.

Are you suggesting that some of the nurses who ARE on the NMC register and are working as nurses shouldn't be as their qualifications aren't rigorous enough or are faked? It seems likely that there will be some - people will always be cheeky fuckers - but it's impossible to know how many or where they're from because they're flying under the radar.

But yes, it is very important for all regulatory bodies to check the qualifications and background of all those attempting to join their register, and that's especially so when someone qualified overseas where qualifications and expectations can be very different to UK ones.
