To prefer solo travel?

I love travelling alone and find it incredibly fulfilling. I enjoy the freedom to explore at my own pace and make spontaneous decisions. However, I’ve noticed that some people think solo travel is unusual or lonely. AIBU for preferring to travel solo and finding it more enjoyable than group or family trips?

Solo travel is fine - I love it and definitely less stressful than travelling with some of my family and friends (who of course I love dearly as long as I am not on holiday with them 🙂 ) !

I suspect most of the people thinking it is lonely or unusual are sitting there enviously wishing they could do it themselves instead of having to holiday with moody teens / PIL etc !

I have always preferred travelling solo. Now with kids and limited funds it's not an option for me.

I very selfishly loved that I never needed to compromise with anyone and I always met such interesting people when travelling alone.

YANBU. I definitely prefer travelling solo to travelling with my husband, much more relaxed.

I love solo travel too.

Its absolutely fine that some people don’t enjoy it / don’t think they’d enjoy it, but if they tell you it’s unusual or lonely they’re just projecting their own feelings.

This is about the 4th or 5th solo travel thread in a week. I expect because it's September so lots of adults will be going away without kids.

Not sure how you can be unreasonable though?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 10/09/2024 22:47

I really enjoy it. So much to be said for doing things at your own pace/ in your own way and never having to compromise.

Im not sure if I exactly prefer it - I guess I like to have solo travel and family/ friends travel in my life - they’ve all got pros and cons, and they’re all things I want to keep doing.

HeySummerWhereAreYou · 10/09/2024 22:49

Of course YANBU to prefer it yourself. As a pp said a personal preference cannot be unreasonable. Bizarre thing to post on AIBU!

Wouldn't be for me, I prefer having a companion for travelling. Friend, DH, or DC. I like going on day trips on my own sometimes, and for long walks, but not anything more than a single day.

You do you though @SoloWanderer.

Solo travel can be so much better for a culture holiday because you can completely immerse yourself without worrying about other people . A beach holiday I'd prefer company though .

Doing a solo holiday & having a day or two with friends / family as part of it is great. But the absolute max time I can spend with anyone, however much I love them, is 2 days before the need for alone time kicks in.

Maybe 3 days with my sister.
