Almost 2 and a half year old inconsolable over smallest things suddenly

He's been having tantrums and such for a while of course, totally normal.

Tantrums happen more when we are out and about and he has to finish a fun activity for example.

But for the last few days he literally cries and sounds like a baby again, at the smallest things.

Example, this morning we were about to go downstairs, he got to the stair gate and I said- let me just get the bottle from last night. He lost it, because we were not going down immediately and I turned around for maybe 10 seconds to get the bottle..

He cried for probably around 20 minutes.

Yesterday was the same, all day just crying. Also he's not been wanting to eat anything I've made for him for dinner for about a week. Stuff he'd usually eat. He just wants what he wants and he'll scream and cry for absolute ages when he doesn't get it.

What could this change be all about ?

My guess they have an illness and they will develop a temperature/spots/snot or something in the next couple of days and everything will make sense.
