To think this is a scam or just plain CF?

I just received a random fb message from a mum that my son went to nursery with over a year ago. Its asking for £5 to borrow for the week. Is this a messenger scam? Wouldn't they ask for more money or send links? I don't know whether to reply that I don't have online banking or just to ignore it...

Just ignore the message - she has no idea that you even still use that number so is sending it into the ether. Either that or she has sent it to everyone in her contacts list in the hope someone will respond.

post on her actual FB page or comment on her most recent post - hi, think you might have been hacked, just got a weird message from your messenger account asking for money.

I'd probably be thinking it's a scam in the situation you've described

Londonrach1 · 07/09/2024 21:21

Ignore. Not sure if Whatsapp but nasty person or company or randoms took over my Facebook and asked for £5 from all my friends... luckily all my friends knew me and knew I never ask for money and messaged me to let me know and another friend with me got my Facebook back and it's now very secure and locked down but made me very careful. Not one of my friends believed the scammer. Id be tempted to block on whatapp

I had this asking for a fiver. Turns out my friend was hacked, and mortified her contacts were asked for money.

Jackdanielsg1 · 07/09/2024 21:35

Thanks for the reassurances. I think I'll ignore it for now and assume it's a scam as I don't have her actual phone number.

She's probably been hacked.
My DH had a message from me asking to borrow £10. He knew it was a scam because we share an account so I'd never need to borrow money off him. My FB has been hacked.
