To go abroad for the weekend?

I am about to finish an extremely hard university degree that's taken me four years. Mixture of placement and lectures.

I've been working 60+ hours a week at points. It's been a shit few years.

Because of placement I've not been able to take DS away.

I finish this week. I really want to take him abroad but school is back!

Has anyone ever gone abroad for a weekend? Am I crazy? Is there any point?

Congratulations! Do a city break somewhere like Paris or Amsterdam. Short hop flight.

I’ve been a few times. Depending on which airport/where you’re going, it can be a long faff.

we have a short weekend in December and we’re going to Bruges on the Eurostar. Pick flight times and destinations carefully!

Do it!!

Prep everything for Monday now, have basics in for a packed lunch etc if you need it

Short hop flight on Friday night, hand luggage only in bags you can carry, then pick as late a flight on Sunday as you can stomach before school on Monday. Not the end of the world if he's tired for one day! Book an online food delivery for Sunday night or Monday night and go have fun!

Definitely. Left on Friday night and got an early Eurostar on Monday morning. From the station straight into school/office. It was actually rather lovely.
Of course, we lived in London at the time so it was as easy as catching a local train (easier, actually as Eurostar service is more reliable).
Airports are much more of a faff but I flew to Prague and Bordeaux several times for a weekend.

What do you mean ‘has anyone ever gone abroad for a weekend?’??? People do it all the time. Have you seriously never heard of weekend breaks abroad?

twilightcafe · 03/09/2024 12:58

Depending on where you live it could be exciting to fly to another UK city.

mindutopia · 03/09/2024 13:16

Definitely do it. It’s fun just going somewhere new and you can do a lot in 2 days.

I've done Majorca, Benidorm, Paris, Dublin, Isle of Mann. All short flights for the weekend.

Rory17384949 · 03/09/2024 13:24

Yes I've done it! Depending where you are based the Eurostar could be more pleasant than dealing with airports.

Friday evening or Saturday morning Ryanair flight Stansted to Billund, returning late on Sunday evening. Spend time at Legoland, Lego House and WOW Park.

I spent two years on secondment to Jersey whilst DH remained in London, so we'd 'commute' every weekend. Short, 45 min flight about 6pm on Friday, back Sunday evening. It was very doable!
