to let dog on the sofa?

Got a new puppy, never had dogs on seating before, always had their own beds. DH wants to keep it this way, I'm happy to give up half of 'my' sofa (we have two opposite each other), AIBU?

The settee in question is an old leather one from IKEA that was bought second hand for £50 if that makes a difference. Pup would only be on sofa when I am, will still have own sleeping quarters elsewhere.

YABU and the pup stays on the floor
YANBU puppy snuggles!!

Neither of you are BU as such -you just have different opinions!

But personally I think to change the status quo in this kind of situation , it’s more fair of both of you are on board.

It sounds as if you’ve had dogs previously where you’ve both agreed to not have them on the sofa, so there’s a pre-existing expectation.

Same as if you’ve always have dogs on sofa then for this new puppy your partner wanted dog free sofas, I think you would need to be on board too.

We allow our dog on the sofas, although we cover the 'nicer' sofa with a throw, which gets a regular wash. He's part of the family and we get as much out of having him with us as he does from being there.

there is nothing worse when visiting someones house and their 'baby' jumps all over you while you sit on the sofa!

my DIL has a labrador, thats 3 years old now, its wrecked their brand new sofa, its covered in dog hair, it has its own 'spot' and god forbid you sit in it. when you are sitting trying to have a cup of tea and a chat, its all over you, nudging you to play, breathing in your face, dropping manky toys in your lap.. and they just laugh if off as oh 'insert name here' just wants to play!

dogs need discipline, and dogs although may be invited up on the sofa occasionally, please don't make it 'their place'

It sounds stressful. I’d probably just stand the whole time and make my visits there short 😆 but it’s interesting you say it’s your DIL dog. I assume your child who is married to them is the co-owner?

Don't mind dogs on dirty old sofas, like on in the garden or down the stables but not in living room.

Their bums all over where you sit. Yuck! I don't mind sitting on the floor for cuddles- so wouldn't miss out on that. But sofas that regularly have dogs on always smell- regardless of throws and febreeze.

We have had quite a few dogs over the years and they have all been allowed on the sofa. They are our family so of course they can lay on the sofa and dog snuggles are lovely.

Pick your battles lol.

If you make a rule you need to stick to it and have everybody in the house stick to it. No exceptions whatsoever as that will confuse poor dog.

If you leave the dog alone in the room he will just learn to get on the sofa only when you are not home, so be aware your rule may be unnenforcable unless you plan to crate train or section him off to kitchen etc for when you are out.

I've always let my dog on the sofa but never on the bed. They have all seemed to respect this and even when in out wouldn't try get on the bed (I have cams inside so can see!). I think if you plan to let the on the sofa you should plan to have leather sofas going forward as once a dog has been on a frantic sofa 5 times it will stink/stain and life is too short to keep cleaning the bloody things. Real leather is hard wearing too. Most pleather will be torn by dogs nails immediately if you have a medium/large breed.

Good luck with your pup. Just reinforce the rules you need to live with when the dog is full grown!

My dogs are allowed on the sofa as long as they aren't wet after a walk! It's one of the loveliest elements of having them, big Labrador cuddles every night in front of of the tv! We have throws which we use and wash regularly.

CrushingOnRubies · 03/09/2024 19:32

Dog cuddles on the sofa are the best. And it makes brushing their coat so much comfier for all involved

wavingfuriously · 03/09/2024 19:36

My dog sleeps in our bed😊🐶

I lost my dog unexpectedly earlier this year. She didn’t make it to old age. It’s such a comfort that she was always with me, sitting next to me on the sofa, lying next to me at night. I’m glad I gave her a comfortable life, she was a cuddly sighthound who would have hated sitting on the floor.

RandomMess · 03/09/2024 20:13

We have fleece throws for the sofa for the dog. She is small, needy and very cuddly.

UmopapIsdn · 03/09/2024 20:19

Sofa dog for sure! I cant imagine not letting them snuggle up with you every day.

I LOVE going to other people’s houses and their dog plops down beside me and demands pets. 😍

Duchess379 · 03/09/2024 20:20

My dogs sleep on my bed!

Supersimkin7 · 03/09/2024 20:20

Dog’s house, dog’s rules.

Sofa snuggles lovely for all.

MoreCardassianThanKardashian · 03/09/2024 20:42

Yes, yes, yes! But only when invited and they know it's a privilege/understand the rules. No sofa for cheeky bastards.
