Why?

OP posts:
hildabaker · 02/09/2024 14:43

What?

JanglingJack · 02/09/2024 14:45

So...

I was reading your title and thought I'd reply.

Fairysteps11 · 02/09/2024 14:46

Some people may find it easier to type what is in their head, like they're chatting and opening up rather than writing it in a professional manner.

JanglingJack · 02/09/2024 14:46

That is all. Nothing to add.

Starting threads with a single word. Why?

w1ldfl0wer · 02/09/2024 14:48

I’ve just had a look through the active threads list and not a single one began with So. It’s not exactly a common issue.

Laiste · 02/09/2024 14:48

So ... 😆
I think it's maybe because OP writes the title and then they type like they'd speak.

Got something to tell you ...
So ... x y z

Not something which bothers me tbh.

Vettrianofan · 02/09/2024 14:48

So?

Just4thisthreadtoday · 02/09/2024 14:49

life

there you can have that. FOC.

Starting threads with a single word. Why?

long title post, then discuss is another annoying start.

splatmouse · 02/09/2024 15:22

Good afternoon,

I am posting to Mumsnet today in order to enquire as to whether or not my mother in law is being unreasonable. Thank you in anticipation of your response.

Kind regards,

On a par with starting a post with "Hey".

Didimum · 02/09/2024 15:38

It's a conversational tone. Jeez, some people on here really need to get out more.

Conversational tones are not acceptable on MN. One must speak properly at all times, in cut glass RP only.

So, so what, do you just wanna start a fight?

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 02/09/2024 15:56

🤷 different people 'talk' in different ways. Some more informally than others.

ThereWeAreThenNoPunIntended · 02/09/2024 15:57

Bear with its a long post .....

Createausername1970 · 02/09/2024 15:58

I admit to being massively irritated by people starting conversations with "So". I don't know when it started being a thing, but suddenly everyone was doing it.

I can't say I have noticed it too much on here though, unless I filter it out 🙂

My Dad was giving out about DH doing it when we met 22 years ago.

FatOaf · 02/09/2024 16:02

Well. A large proportion of opening posts on Mumsnet threads are obviously written by AI (although this is very much stretching the meaning of the word "intelligence"). Evidently, the particular tool has beginning posts with "So" as a feature. Other AI tools begin them with "Well".

OnlyFrench · 02/09/2024 16:04

DD starts every voice note with it 😊

JerryHasSprungAgain · 02/09/2024 16:06

annoyedatlandlord · 02/09/2024 14:42

Why?

I've noticed it's something people younger than me do, but I quite like it - it sort of introduces an idea, or development, like "Well".

"Well, I'll explain our business strategy,"

"So, this is our business strategy"

5128gap · 02/09/2024 16:10

I think all threads should start with "Right then, here's one for for ya" or "Er...guys...? a moment, if I may..." depending on how posh you are. I've emailed MNHQ to have them put it in the talk guidelines.
