I hate the phrase “I’m just a girl”

I’ve heard this phrase from young women a couple of times recently and have just seen it as a sticker on a young woman’s car. Am I misunderstanding what it means. It seems so belittling and demeaning.

My mum says all the time ‘I was left to do all the caring for elderly beloved late gran because I’m the girl’.
I know it’s bollocks as I have lots of male friends who do their share.
Struggling to get over it over a year later.

Just a Girl by No Doubt has become something of a meme on TikTok recently.

username44416 · 31/08/2024 15:13

It's a bit of a thing on social media. These grown women make out they can't do things because they're 'just girls'. Perhaps they're looking for kudos from sexists, I don't know. I don't understand it either.

Hillrunning · 31/08/2024 15:16

Well you haven't told us what you think it means. So how can we know if you've got it wrong?

CountessConstanceMarkievicz · 31/08/2024 15:16

Could it be a meme from Notting Hill?

I’m just a girl, standing in front of an x, asking to y

has become a popular meme based on this clip

Boidont · 31/08/2024 15:17

I’m another one who assumed this was a no doubt reference. I’ve never heard anyone actually say that.

My teen is doing this, it's the No Doubt song doing the rounds. She would be very angry if someone told her that she couldn't do something because she's a girl but, alas, cannot see a problem with parroting the phrase. She thinks it's funny!

I think it means along the lines of:
Don’t expect too much of me, I’m just a girl.
I don’t know how to do that, I’m just a girl.
I didn’t know that, I’m just a girl.
Ie it has a negative connotation. It doesn’t seem to be saying, I’m awesome, I’m just a girl. It seems belittling and babyish.

I thought of Notting Hill but could be wrong

@Hillrunning sorry that was in response to your post.

Oh then yes, I think you have fundamentally misunderstood it. I'm my experience, the way I've heard people use it isn't at all that context. As others have said, it mostly seems to be a nod to the song. And so calling bullshit on being viewed as 'just a girl' by society. For example, I work at a University, I've seen it be used under people's graduation posts of people getting thier impressive degrees, a much younger colleague used it when she got an interview for a really cool job etc. The less common use I've experienced is the movie reference.

Take this pink ribbon off my eyes
I'm exposed and it's no big surprise
Don't you think I know exactly where I stand?
This world is forcing me to hold your hand

'Cause I'm just a girl, a little 'ol me
Well don't let me out of your sight
Oh I'm just a girl, all pretty and petite
So don't let me have any rights

Oh I've had it up to here

The moment that I step outside
So many reasons for me to run and hide
I can't do the little things I hold so dear
'Cause it's all those little things that I fear

This article explains it quite well. There are a lot of memes on social media about how women can't do things because they're 'just a girl '. It's maddening but maybe they think it's cute. I don't know.

https://www.theguardian.com/society/article/2024/aug/10/from-brats-to-tradwives-why-do-we-keep-putting-women-into-subcultures

Self-infantilisation underpins almost all these trends, with women painting themselves as characteristically incapable of doing basic tasks, using the patronising refrain “I’m just a girl!” to perpetuate the idea that women can’t drive, lift weights or even do their jobs effectively (videos like these are everywhere and generate millions of views).

That’s really interesting. Thanks for explaining that. 👍🏻

Today's generation of women includes every living female over the age of 18. I'm not sure you can make such a sweeping statement about so many people. No woman I know revels in being 'just a girl'.

Spondoolies · 31/08/2024 16:23

The No Doubt song is empowering, it’s saying I’m sick of being told I’m just a girl and can’t do what I want.
