This is deliberately misleading from PayPal?

I somehow ended up with minus £14.99 in my paypal account.

I can't remember how, something to do with a refund or something.

But it was months ago and I've been on my arse so not been a priority to send them 15 quid even though I know I owe it them.

I was hoping to sort some bits to sell on Ebay and use PP so it covers it.

But this morning I got this email and when I tried to log in it wouldn't accept my details.

So I thought I'd been hacked. Account is unavailable and to me this email reads like there were USA dollars deposited in to my account and they had retrieved the £14.99 from those dollars at an exchange rate of XYZ

I have extreme MH issues and that's the reason I'm financially on my arse. I'm unable to work right now and I'm teetering on the edge.

This sent me over and I'm crying thinking I'm part of some huge international scam and I'm going to be thousands of dollars in debt from a scammer.

I ring paypal and they say nope, they've just closed my account because of the 14.99 and I can pay it and get it open again.

I ask about the American money and they say it's a generic email. I ask what it means as it sounds like they've cleared the balance with American currency and they just repeat to ignore it, it's just generic.

AIBU to think they shouldn't send out emails like this? Making people think they've been hacked??

Nor me.

I wouldn't worry about it OP. Just don't click on any links in any emails

'We've made a transfer between the balances of different currencies in your PayPal account'

You don't think that suggests that there were multiple currencies in the account? And they've transfered them to cover the debt?,

It looks like the refund was a USD refund and they are showing you the amount owed in GBP as that's what your account is?
Is there a refund owing ? Did you have fees from Ebay?
I can't say whether PayPal are being unreasonable unless you are saying it's not a transaction that is yours

No the refund is completely u related and was a UK company and I paid 14.99 in pounds. Dollars never came into it.

OK so you paid £14.99 for something with PayPal? Did you have funds in PayPal to cover it?

You're misunderstanding.

Months ago I paid for a tshirt. 14.99. I ended up getting a refund for it. But rather than refunding my paypal account that I paid from it wrnt back to my card. Putting my paypal account 14.99 in debt.

I didn't know this for about 6 weeks till I next went to use it.

Paypal closed the account and sent the email above

Rather than one saying 'you're 14.99 in debt so we've closed your account. To reopen it please call us and settle the debt.'

They sent an email about balance transfers, dollars and currencies. Which they said is a generic email and to ignore. It means nothing.

So why send it? To make people think something is wrong and ring rather than being honest as to why the account is closed.

And BTW I was on hold for 35 mins to be told this then they put me through to the billing department to settle the 14.99 and they just put the phone down.
