In thinking that many posters vote in threads they don't participate in?

Inspired by the "visible thanks" debate thread.

I frequently vote in polls on threads I don't actively participate in. Many of my notifications are about final poll results. I go to these threads and realise I haven't posted a single reply. Even when I go back after the poll closes, I just check the results without posting anything.

Is this unusual?

YABU - The polls and/or notifications of final poll results prompt me to make a reply to the thread most of the time

YANBU - I vote in most polls without actively participating in the discussion

Laughing at the 6% saying they don’t vote without participating and then… not participating (or am I the joker for doing the opposite?)

Kangarude · 27/08/2024 16:42

I sometimes click on a thread and take part in the vote but don’t post on the thread.
If I get an email with the poll results, I just delete it. It wouldn’t make me go back and post on the thread

I can't vote on my phone so am the other way round

KrisAkabusi · 27/08/2024 16:52

Obviously not. There's 4 replies to this, but over 30 votes. You can see the number of votes on every poll.

Abouttimeforanamechange · 27/08/2024 16:58

I might vote but not comment because I haven't got anything to say that hasn't already been said by previous posters. Threads where lots of people just say 'This!' or don't say anything new are tedious to scroll through.

LittleGreenDragons · 27/08/2024 17:00

I don't vote at all, even those I've posted in or feel invested in.

JC03745 · 27/08/2024 17:02

I might vote, then by the time I've read through to the end- they already have an answer, so I don't bother adding a comment.

I recently found I was being thanked for posts, and when I checked, that person never added a comment on the actual post. Maybe 5 of my posts a day were thanked by this same person, yet never a comment from them. I contacted MNHQ, as assumed they were a troll. They apparently aren't, but people also thank others posts, without adding comments too.

BarbaraHoward · 27/08/2024 17:06

Yeah of course, all the time. I thank without posting too. I would've thought most people do. And I would guess even more read without voting, thanking or posting. I think some people don't understand how big MN is.

CaptainMyCaptain · 27/08/2024 17:09

There's no point repeating what others have already posted. Sometimes it's a simple question that doesn't require a comment. I don't get notifications of Poll results.

BotterMon · 27/08/2024 17:09

I have turned off poll results emails. Sometimes will vote and not participate as the OP is so obviously unreasonable (to me) I'd have to respond in a manner that would be ruder than I'd like.

Yeah, I either quote posters or I thank them, but I don't think I've ever done both.

I often thank posts on threads without commenting, if the poster has said what I would have said. No point saying it again. I sometimes vote without commenting too.

I have email notifications turned off so don't see poll results.

Onthefinalstretch · 27/08/2024 18:45

I vote on threads and often don't post anything
Some threads I comment on but don't vote- if the OP hasn't been clear enough about what a vote either way actually means or if I really don't think my view point coincides with either of the sides in the vote.
As regards the thanks button:I dont see why you think it's necessary to comment on a post you've thanked.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 27/08/2024 18:51

They participate by voting.

Starlingexpress · 27/08/2024 18:53

I’ll vote if it interests me, give thanks if I agree with a post ( not just an OP) and I may or may not comment. I don’t really have a consistent approach 😆

Flibflobflibflob · 27/08/2024 19:21

Yeah it’s interesting, theres been a few where if you only read the comments you would think opinion is very much one way but the poll results display the exact opposite. I sometimes just vote because I have nothing to say.

StarSlinger · 27/08/2024 19:24

I often vote YABU if I think the thread is a load of bollocks troll thread.

I often thank in place of an answer. It means the poster has expressed my opinion well, so I don't need to.

HowardTJMoon · 27/08/2024 19:34

Sometimes I'll read the OP, vote, then read the rest of the thread and see that my opinion has been voiced a dozen times over and so there's no point in saying the same thing. Or it's that the thread has gone in a direction that I've got no real interest in participating in.
