This is horrendously embarrassing - my nose smells!

Anyone had the same?

How do I fix it?

It's been a while now.

When I sneeze I smell the most horrible smell afterwards. Like old dribble and stuff.

I dread if I need to sneeze near people in case they smell it.

Has anyone had similar? How do I get rid of it?

Not currently congested or anything.

Go to the doctor

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 21/08/2024 22:04

I've not heard of this but could you used a nasal rinse? Me and DH use this when we have colds and it is so good to clear out your sinuses.

Also, could the smell actually be from your stomach?

Kipperthedawg · 21/08/2024 22:04

Maybe try saline spray twice a day up each nostril

Oldinjuryhelp111037 · 21/08/2024 22:05

Sinus infection!

Hedjwitch · 21/08/2024 22:07

Use a neti pot to rinse sinuses with saline water

binglemyoats · 21/08/2024 22:08

I think it's fairly normal, it's stuff from way back in your nasal passages so it does tend to smell. I have good oral hygiene and it still smells a bit weird if I accidentally sneeze on myself.

PrimalLass · 21/08/2024 22:09

My son and I ended up with nose infections like that after a flight. It was sore and smelly. It went away but I think we probably got some sort of nasal spray.

Ginkypig · 21/08/2024 22:11

There’s a few reasons it can happen

Smelly mouth which you can smell through your nose instead of your mouth caused by dehydration or infection or tooth decay

sinus infection
left over crap if you have had a cold or hayfever
post nasal drip
there could be a polyp up there

and other reasons

the fact it is not there all the time says to me it’s probably higher up in the sinus rather than something going on in the nostrils
but
there are sprays you can get
or flushing it with saline water can help

it depends what is causing it.

it might be an idea to get a gp appointment to check as you may need an antibiotic spray

MyNoseSmells · 21/08/2024 22:19

Thanks all.

I do have a nasal rinse kit but not used for a little while so I think maybe I'll get back on that but this has been for a couple of years and have rinsed since after this has been noticeable.

I do sometimes worry it could be breath but have asked a few close family/friends to be honest and other than DH and DC saying about when I wake up or if I've had a coffee etc then no breath complaints.

I think maybe I should be strict with the nasal rinse for a couple of weeks and if no improvement then see the GP - although feels very much like I'm going to get a "why are you bothering me" sort of attitude as I'm not unwell/in pain etc with it.

You could potentially have chronic sinusitis.

What is your oral hygiene like? Do you attend the hygienist every six months as recommended?

I would definitely make an appointment with your GP.

ChristmasOrange · 21/08/2024 22:44

I’ve never experienced this, but regarding oral
hygiene, do you brush or scrape your tongue? A lot of people miss this step.

Hankunamatata · 21/08/2024 22:47

I'd saline nasal rinse twice a day, drink lots of water and make sure your teeth are OK.

KreedKafer · 21/08/2024 22:49

Sounds like an ongoing sinus infection / catarrh / post nasal drip type thing.

desperatedaysareover · 21/08/2024 22:51

Post nasal drip, sneeze is blasting the gross crap out?

FFSWherearemyglasses · 21/08/2024 23:20

Yes, I suffer terribly with sinus issues and recently, after a particularly stubborn sinusitis attack, this horrendous smell developed. It knocked me sick it was just putrid 🤢
antibiotics didn’t shift it.
I got a saline spray and Beconase from the chemist that did the trick.

oakleaffy · 21/08/2024 23:21

@MyNoseSmells I had a really heavy fluey cold that left me with sinusitis- If I bent down, I could smell a ''dead mouse'' smell in my nose.

GP said to buy a Neil med sinus rinse - and to lean upside down so sinuses got the warm saline water- the treatment took 2 weeks to clear.

It was only when I bent down I could smell it, like doing top my laces or putting on socks.
Just like a dead mouse. Horrible!

Yes, my GP refused antibiotics and said Neil med was the way to treat it. It smelled foul! My son said he couldn't smell it though.
But I definitely could.

Seeing the gunk come out is soooo satisfying.

CatMum10 · 21/08/2024 23:31

Could you have tonsil stones? Like calcified gunk in the crypts of your tonsils? You can usually only smell them after sneezing or breathing through your noise. You can see them in a mirror with a torch or your phone, if you tense your tonsils. You will see white blobs inside your tonsils. I haven't had them for years but I got them once years ago after an illness and the weird smell was driving me mad for ages. They're really common.
