Fear of flying

Has anyone on here got over a fear of flying and how did you do it?

I really hate flying - I didn’t used to and have flown to New Zealand in the past. But since having kids it’s taken hold and it’s becoming crippling. I am worried about passing it on to my kids now- my 16 year old doesn’t like flying either.

I hate the feeling of being on a tube in the air with nothing below us & have irrational thoughts about it! Hate turbulence, hate the sensation of taking off and landing.

Really want to do a longer haul holiday next year but the flight is putting me off.

Aibu to ask how you got passed a fear of flying - what did you do?

No matter how all the statistics tell you it is the safest form of travel, I used to be like this until I looked at it this way…
It isn’t the case that there is nothing underneath.
Like a boat rides water, a plane rides air.

Even with all engines out, the plane can ride that air, it doesn’t just drop.

Try and imagine the air has a colour. Just because you can’t see it, it doesn’t mean it isn’t there.

Have a course of hypnosis/hypnotherapy. It's one of the most common phobias and very easy to deal with.

I had a terrible fear of flying - last year, going on holiday, the flight was awful for me as I was so nervous and couldn't enjoy it or relax.

A few months ago, ahead of this year's holiday, I did the easy jet fearless flyers course, with experience flight. It was absolutely brilliant! As part of the online course, there is a pilot who talks through all the common fears (plane falling from the sky, engine failure etc).

On the experience flight, you have a pilot in the cabin with you, talking through everything and answering questions.

I went on holiday at the start of August and came back on Saturday. I can honestly say, I enjoyed my flights, looked out of the windows, even got up and used the toilets with no issues at all.

The course, including flight, was about £240 - best money I have spent!
