Pork belly out for 5-6 hours

I went food shopping this morning and brought pork belly for dinner. This was at 10am and we've only just got home as we went to the park and for a few bits out of the house.

Is the pork belly safe to eat?? It's spiced so I won't be able to smell if it's smelling not great

I always leave it out that long if it needs to defrost.

QuestionableMouse · 19/08/2024 15:00

I personally wouldn't eat it, especially if it's been sat in a hot car during that time.

Justme2023123 · 19/08/2024 15:00

If it's a fairly warm day where you are then no I wouldn't risk eating it, and I've got a fairly strong stomach

TwoNoMore · 19/08/2024 15:00

Thanks all, it's quite a muggy day where we are and while it hasn't been in the car it's been sat at the park with us Hmm

Also just because something smells okay doesn't mean it's safe to eat.

Pantherino · 19/08/2024 15:02

Should still smell it through the spice.

IdLikeToBeAFraser · 19/08/2024 15:03

If it was hot out, I'd be hesitant, but if you were going to cook it today, and thoroughly, I think it would be fine. But what I wouldn't do is now stick it in the fridge and leave it for a few days. Basically, when food is out of the fridge, bacteria and decomposition accelerates for obvious reasons. So it has all that extra bacteria and more decomposition so will not last in the fridge.

The easiest way to see this in action is in the context of milk - milk that has been left out for a couple of hours is still fine to drink. You can see and taste and smell that. BUT, that same milk carton will go off, even in the fridge, that much quicker than milk purchased at the same time that has been left in the fridge the entire time.

Personally I think it will be fine. I usually leave meat out for at least a few hours before cooking so it isn't cold when it goes into the oven. Just make sure you cook it today and do so thoroughly. Don't refrigerate and leave as that would give bacteria a chance to multiply again.

Bin

Hiphopopotamonster · 19/08/2024 15:27

Bloody hell are people really that paranoid about food that they’d actually bin it? It’ll be fine 🙄

olderbutwiser · 19/08/2024 15:39

I'd eat it without hesitation.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 19/08/2024 15:42

Can I ask why you brought your pork belly to the park?

This.

Plus meat is best brought to room temperature before cooking, and pork belly needs ages of low slow cooking, so I would chuck it in the oven around now anyway.

It fancied a crackling time.

Bit personal😁

TwoNoMore · 19/08/2024 15:55

🤣🤣🤣🤣 it came to the park as we had a last minute play date.

I've put it in the fridge without thinking and now I'm doubly questioning myself. The horror of being an overthinker!

Putting it in the fridge is fine. Just eat it today, or at worst, tomorrow.

Yes, that's the best thing. Today, I put chicken thighs out at 7am and put them in the Ninja at 11:45. I've done that forever and I haven't died yet!

PrawnAgain · 19/08/2024 16:27

I would eat it. It's only a few hours and it would have been cold from the fridge from the shop for a couple of hours. People survived without fridges for hundreds of years. I'm horrified that so many posters would chuck it, what a waste!

TwoNoMore · 19/08/2024 16:40

Right it's in the airfryer, I've put it on for an extra 3 minuets and I'll update tomorrow if I've been poisoned or not Grin

Mynewnameis · 19/08/2024 16:44

I'd cook it for a long time if it was me.
I did bin bacon the other day as it had fallen out of shopping bag and stayed in car for 2 days. Was gutted when I discovered this with a hangover and found no bacon in fridge.

marshmallowfinder · 19/08/2024 16:57

Yanbu to give it a go in the airfryer. Hopefully it'll be fine.
Yabvvvvu to say brought instead of bought though. 😭

FrenchandSaunders · 19/08/2024 16:58

I would, DH wouldn't. But then he refused to use some deep heat yesterday that was two months 'out of date' 🙄

SinnerBoy · 19/08/2024 17:22

You should have smeared some in his underpants, when he wasn't looking!

Biggaybear · 19/08/2024 17:23

Yes it will be fine.

I wonder sometimes about the younger generation.
