Ongoing loss of appetite.. I’m so scared?

I've had no appetite at all since April. I also have nausea, tiredness, heartburn, stomach pains and a change in bowel habits. Food just doesn't appeal at all like when you have a stomach bug, I've lost 1.5 stone.
I've had bloods, upper endoscopy and an abdominal pelvis ct scan. Currently awaiting FIT test results to see if I need a colonoscopy or not.

Has anyone ever had similar? I'm 35.

My husband had this back in early 2020 just before Covid became a “thing” and after a lot of investigations over a very long period of time they concluded it was effects of long covid.

Heron26 · 18/08/2024 21:12

Exact same as my mums symptoms, happened just after she had a stomach bug kind of illness or may have been covid but tests were negative. She's a bit better now but it went on for months and months. She had lots of tests and was referred to hospital but they all came back normal.

Milly16 · 18/08/2024 21:31

Yup I had this. Lost lots of weight. Had tests etc. Eventually appetite just came back.

unicornbathbomb · 18/08/2024 22:16

@Milly16 how long did it last for? What did they put it down to?

Are you pooping normally? I always lose interest in eating if Im constipated.

DelilahBucket · 18/08/2024 22:23

Yes I had this. I went on omeprazole and had to completely change my eating, reintroducing all the usual heartburn offenders one by one. I was only eating a toddler portion of food at any one time and just felt sick most of the time. I also discovered I am allergic to calcium propionate which is in bread products and it was causing horrendous stomach pain.

Same as my mum as well, anything greasy or tomato based she couldn't eat. She was also bloated and had heartburn

If you do have a colonoscopy - feel free to pm any questions
Ive had a few

Dont freak out if your Qfit is positive

  • it can be positive for things like benign polyps / ( non cancer things )
5128gap · 18/08/2024 22:46

Do you take regular ibuprofen?

unicornbathbomb · 19/08/2024 20:30

Has anyone else had loss of appetite and nausea for an extended period of time? I'm worried it's a symptom of cancer

It could be sibo.

We were worried about this with my mum as she was also vomiting/had nausea whenever she did eat but all appetite gone really, even soup would set her off. all results normal and it eventually just got better after quite a few months. Try not to worry but I know it's hard not too sometimes. It's reassuring that your other results were OK. Hopefully you will get your FIT results soon x

YourElatedLimeShark · 19/08/2024 21:58

Do you drink (or consume) stuff with artificial sweetner in? I had this exact same thing recently and did a strict food diary and narrowed it down to sweetener, particularly sucralose. I was drinking protein shakes with it in and cans of Monster etc. even Rice Krispie cakes have sweeteners in now!!

And if you google the side effects of them it’s GI issues.

They are in so many things now since the sugar tax came about. Check your labels if yo u think it could be this.

YourElatedLimeShark · 19/08/2024 21:59

I was just about to do a FIT test (I’m 40) when I figured this out. Stopped them and felt better within a week.

FoxtrotOscarFoxtrotOscar · 19/08/2024 22:01

I had similar but pre-Covid times.
No appetite, lost about 5kg.
A scan of major organs was inconclusive.
Dr didn't seem at all concerned and advised against calorie-laden drinks from the chemist, instead suggested stuff like avocados and nuts!
In time my appetite returned and I wonder whether worry about a parent's serious illness affected me more than I realised.

Purplefoxes · 08/01/2025 22:09

Hi @unicornbathbomb OP did you get to the bottom of this in the end? Hope you are feeling much better now and what ever it was has resolved.

My father has strikingly similar symptoms it's very weird, no appetite at all and losing a ton of weight without trying? Just wondered what tests you had as Dr being very dismissive and won't even do a blood test.

Junaluma · 08/01/2025 23:35

I had symptoms like this earlier last year. It lasted about 2.5 months. No appetite, awful nausea, insomnia, diarrhea and headaches. It disappeared by itself eventually and hasn’t returned. I was going through quite a stressful period so that might have been it.
