Went to see a nhs podiatry and he said not ingrown. And just clipped the toe nail not very straight and told me to wear sandals instead. It’s sooo sore. Surely this is ingrown?!

Looks it to me, but they are the experts

Floral8 · 17/08/2024 14:39

Yes it’s just so sore and swollen and just keeps bleeding :(

That looks for sore. If it’s not I grown, then what is it? Did they give any opinion on that as, to the best of my knowledge, healthy toes should not be painful, swollen and bleeding!

Hankunamatata · 17/08/2024 14:39

Possibly infected rather than ingrown

HRTQueen · 17/08/2024 14:39

That’s how my toe looks when I have an ingrown toenail

itt can be painful

maybe it’s not bad enough for them to treat but I would get it treated asap

Floral8 · 17/08/2024 14:41

He didn’t say what it was really. Just not ingrown and told me to change my footwear to open toe sandals. I was in and out of there but it’s just really sore so don’t know how to treat it

I deal with my own as have a damaged nail of years ago. I sterilise sharp nail scissors, slide down side and cut a slither away that is digging in, tweezers to remove if needed. Then disinfect the area twice a day and air if possible

I'd go to GP and get some anti biotic cream

ConsuelaHammock · 17/08/2024 15:03

Go to a private podiatrist before it gets any worse! Surgery on ingrown toenails cost me £450 recently for my son. One side of each toe very painful. The podiatrist removed both sides of both big toenails as a preventative measure.
If it just needs cut back it shouldn’t cost more than £50ish. Well worth it to stop the pain. My son would have waited years for an NHS appointment.
In the meantime bathe in hot salty water and pat dry.

My god that's hardcore 😂

Yep that's ingrown, with some low level infection possibly. The long edge of the nail down the side looks like it may have chafed or sort of cut into the tissue down the side. I'm guessing the pod meant that there wasn't a shard of nail piercing into the tissue?? But I'm surprised they didn't suggest or do more to be honest!
Salt water bathing to reduced bacterial load - 5-10 mins at a time - warm water and handful of salt. Pat dry / air dry. I would suggest using a spray antibac eg silver dressing, or you could use inadine dressing. Then a call to a private podiatrist to get them to clear and file the nail edge, and pack with cotton wool / dressing on monday. Ask if they have any emergency single issue slots eg that you don't want a routine nail clipping / callus reduction etc - just want the nail sorting!
