If you were going to an event with the dress code "comfortable, but smart"

How would you interpret this dress code? What would you wear? The event is tonight...

Well comfortable suggests that there may be some kind of physical activity - what is the event?

Wide trousers andsilk ( or similar) shirt. Something that made me feel comfortable. Maybe a wrap/ soft big cardigan or similar if it was going to be coolish

Shirtdress and sandals

Classic jeans, white shirt, biker jacket, flats

I am 63 though so my clothes verge on comfortable and smart by default

IsItAMidLifeCrisis · 17/08/2024 14:07

id take that as smart if its dinner, id personally wear something like a nice top, dressy jeans and a jacket with flats/heels

is it at a restaurant/pub/their house?

SummerSplashing · 17/08/2024 14:08

I'd say something like smart jeans top & blazer, rather than evening dress or worn jeans & an old t shirt.

but I'll stay home in my leggings & old over sized t shirt thanks.

User364837 · 17/08/2024 14:09

I’m not sure about jeans.

I think that description is quite confusing!

It is quite confusing, which is why I'm asking for help 😆

That's the official code for "nice top and jeans".

SunnyHedgehog · 17/08/2024 14:12

I'd go dress, tights and boots. My reasoning is the tights some how make it smart, but if I'm really worried I add a blazer jacket😂

Comedycook · 17/08/2024 14:12

I'd focus more on the smart aspect... comfortable is a bit of an odd word to use imo...but I would assume smart but not too smart ie black tie or cocktail dresses. I'd probably wear trousers, nice top and blazer or a midi dress

IdLikeToBeAFraser · 17/08/2024 14:14

That's a very odd description. I mean, are they going to quiz you on whether your shoes are comfortable or if you're wearing your comfortable underwear vs the stuff you put on to make your body look that much better? I actually would find it quite annoying - it's up to me decide how "comfortable" or not my clothes are thank you very much.

But, giving them the benefit of the doubt, I assume they mean don't turn up in shorts and a t-shirt but there's no need to really push the boat out with sky high heels and your best jewellery. Perhaps what woudl normally be called Smart Casual?

dragonfliesandbees · 17/08/2024 14:16

Agree with @IdLikeToBeAFraser. My first thought was that they mean smart/casual.

CheeseWisely · 17/08/2024 14:16

A dress and either wedge sandals or boots, dependent on the weather. Always feel smarter in a dress than jeans.

ShaneFulorgy · 17/08/2024 14:17

Brown elasticated trousers (Brown in case you shit yourself and elasticated so you can eat loads)
Highly patterned multicolured T shirt, loose (Loose to hide growing belly, multicolured and patterned to hide food stains)
Crocs or flip flops any colour (to show your classy, fun side)

BeBopBeBop · 17/08/2024 14:22

My take would be wide trousers and a slightly dressier top as mentioned by PP or non restrictive dress and flats.

If it was specifically tonight based on my own wardrobe I'd be wearing a Rixo silk maxi skirt which is black with small cream stars, a creamy coloured teeshirt (but it's slouchy and kinda off one shoulder) and some black flat slides. I'd maybe take a big black cardigan just in case we're outside after dinner.

I'd say it's comfy because it's relaxed but make an effort because more than nipping to friends for a BBQ.

lolit · 17/08/2024 14:24

I think I'm going to wear this if I can be bothered ironing it

Perfect!

Ginkypig · 17/08/2024 14:28

I think they mean smart casual

so I would interpret it as a nice top and trousers/smart jeans or nice but not too much dress but not full on evening wear or running out to the shops T shirt and jeans wear.

shoes something better than my scabby trainers but no need for a sky high fancy heel (not that I wear heels anymore anyway though lol)

Arrivapercy · 17/08/2024 14:37

I'd go for something like a silk jersey/softer wrap dress etc.

gingercat02 · 17/08/2024 14:40

I have a jumpsuit, which is my dressed down dressed up go-to. It's better than jeans but not a dress.
Or my brown pleather trousers or black coated jeans with a dressy top and heels (don't care about thoughts that heels are out, I still love them)

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 17/08/2024 14:43

It means no tie for men.

smart /casual really, but as everyone’s got a bit more relaxed, some people have taken to interpreting smart/casual as they could wear joggers or leggings etc. it’s to push you towards the smarter end but not feel the need for cocktail dress/heels or suits for men.

that dress would be perfect.

natalienewname · 17/08/2024 14:44

I interpret that as smart but not too smart. So for a man a shirt and jacket but not a suit and no tie.

Personally I’d wear a dress, much like the one you’d suggested. I’d add wedges and a clutch style small bag.

Hope you have a delicious dinner

Dearg · 17/08/2024 16:21

Love that dress 👍

WhatFlavourIsIt · 17/08/2024 17:14

It's an odd description, isn't it. I would interpret it as wear anything, just don't wear leggings & sweatshirt. If the host was a good friend, I'd send her a ' what you wearing?' Text.
