To not want a promotion?

I’ve been in my profession 8 years now. I became a (reluctant) deputy manager 2 years ago and people keep saying I should be manager. I know I’m good enough to do this but I don’t want to! I love being number 2, supporting my manager. I’ve always gravitated to confident, ideas people in relationships. I don’t need the money.
Every time a roll comes up people say “you should go for it!” But I just don’t want to, it’s not ME!
I feel like I’m lazy perhaps?
What can I say as to why I don’t have any ambition?

Your happy as you are, there is nothing wrong with that

Well it's better than someone accepting a promotion when they're not ready for it.

I've seen that countless times - people getting promoted to manager when they're not ready for it, doing a shit job, and ending up being forced out of the company.

There is a constant pushing of people up the ladder. I'm half way up and enjoying the view where I am. Stay put. Sounds like you're in your happy place.

The promotions at my place are all into management roles, not technical. I am not management material, never have been and don't want to either. I can't progress, I'm stuck not lazy. Definitely don't go for a role you would be unhappy or uncertain in.

This is me too. I know I probably could push myself to do a management role but it would have such a negative effect on my MH that I just don't want to, I'm happy as I am and am comfortable financially so what's the point?
