How many reusable bags is too many?

(lighthearted) DH and I have had a major disagreement this morning as to how many carrier bags we should be keeping in the house. He’s got into my carrier bag drawer and started declaring that I don’t need all the bags I have. He reckons (and I personally think this is an over-exaggeration) that I must have 100 bags. I disagree. Anyway, there are different categories and hierarchies of bags. For example bags for the kids to put their muddy shoes in or carry their food tech items to school in. Or nice bags which aren’t gift bags but are nice if you’re dropping something off for a friend, or supermarket bags which I like to keep a few of in the car for emergencies or cotton tote bags which are good to use in lieu of a handbag or to fold up and keep in your handbag for shopping trips…. And so on and so forth. He thinks I’m being utterly unreasonable ! So come on mumsnet! Am I being unreasonable?!

This is the DH here with my wife’s consent she has invited me to contribute. I think the rationale for a bag hierarchy is sound and makes sense - my slight surprise and difficulty is I think 100 bags for this all is too many. Two drawers are dedicated to this and you can barely close them! - have a great day DH

Anyone?

Sounds eminently sensible to me.

(What size are the drawers?)

Although you might be able to turn some into cash - Ocado delivery refunds 10p for each bag you return - wherever the bags came from, not just theirs.

NannyWanny1 · 17/08/2024 23:03

I’m the same.. got bags I got from hols which I just keep becuz! I only have one drawer rammed full but all folded properly lol. My DH goes mad also and he did Chuck sum in the recycling.. but he goes shopping and never takes a bag he buys one🙄

elrider · 17/08/2024 23:06

I agree with the hierarchy but can't imagine why you'd need 100. I'd start offering some spares to others until you have half and see how you get on with that.

My bugbear with bags is that my DH complains about them if there's ANY in the house (he wants a few in each car boot and that's it) yet the irony is I have never bought one and they all come from him buying them on shopping trips when he didn't take a bag. I get rid of them fairly quickly because I give a lot away during clear outs of kids clothes etc on a local free items Facebook group and put items into (HIS collection of) bags for life for people to take away.

theduchessofspork · 17/08/2024 23:06

Have you fessed up about the tote bag cupboards as yet? One for cotton one for jute, I assume.

theduchessofspork · 17/08/2024 23:07

100 is mental, obvs.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 17/08/2024 23:07

Team DH has my vote

Kneeslikethese · 17/08/2024 23:07

Please go and count the bags. The hierarchy is sound but I think around 30-40 bags is sufficient.

I keep at least 10 in my car just in case..

SauviGone · 17/08/2024 23:07

Two drawers full is ridiculous, I’m with your DH on this.

NotSayingImBatman · 17/08/2024 23:09

I’ve got more bags for life than I have actual life left to live. I’ll leave them to my kids, there must be a solid £10k of carrier bags loitering in the cabinet at this point.

Ponderingwindow · 17/08/2024 23:10

One of my obsessions, and it is an obsession as I have ASD, is having the perfect bag for every situation. I have managed to downsize since Amazon introduced same day and overnight shipping for my neighborhood. We now store fewer bags, but at least once a year, I order something last minute.

margotsdevil · 17/08/2024 23:20

Are you me? Similar disagreement in this house just a few days ago Grin DH just does not understand the hierarchy and then seems surprised when I get upset that he used my lovely brand new canvas tote (souvenir) for loose potatoes and veg Angry

pinkgown · 17/08/2024 23:25

Why not? they are supposed to be phased out and there will be a shortage in a few years - or keep them in a cool dark cupboard and they'll be worth a fortune on Antiques Roadshow in 50 years - retire on the proceeds!

Twistybranch · 17/08/2024 23:29

I Don’t use bags for life.

I buy the paper bags if in the shops, then use them as paper/cardboard recycling bins. Once full, put in the cardboard wheelie bin.

I mainly use click and collect and keep a basket in the back of my car. Much easier than bags.

Oh that’s just not on! LTB!

Two drawers ... well, it depends on the size of the drawers obviously but that seems quite modest. It's the number which is surprising, is this an estimate or have you counted them?

Some on this thread may enjoy the song on tonight's episode of R4 'Loose Ends' btw

MN will judge

I know a Postie in the pub who gets a new bag every day he goes to Iceland.
Oh dear.
I said, here's one you can use to recycle .Of course he took it
How many must you have in your house?
He says, I always forget.
Hmm
I'll try again eh? Yes I must

I’ve been on MN long enough to know that only a diagram will do….

I guess you DH has never heard the saying "a girl can never have too many bags" lol🤣🤣

Summertimer · 17/08/2024 23:45

It’s the opposite here, if you start gifting to charity shops they disappear pretty quickly. Bags for life are fast becoming a thing of the past. I’m clearing my late parents house, I’ve run out and they didn’t have much stuff
