Hi, I bought an item for my child which needed to be fitted by a member of staff to ensure it met standards for their hobby. We purchased it, took it home, realised it had been fitted incorrectly, called and said wasn’t correct, went back for a refund, refund was issued, except it wasn’t. They deducted the price again from my account instead of refunding it. So I’m £250 (each item was £125) down. The shop is over an hours drive away, I already had to return once for a refund because they hadn’t fitted the item properly. I have called again, I have both sets of receipts and asked for a refund to be processed. No apologies at all, just a woman grunting at the other end of the phone at me. She told me they would see what they can do if I go back in. It would mean a two hour round trip. Can it be issued without me being present? Their attitude has pissed me off more than anything. They say they can’t even look at refunding without me being there. Thank you.

We couldn't issue a refund without you being there as you need to tap your card to get the refund. We would give you a gift card as a goodwill gesture as well.

I think it depends if they are licensed to take payments over the phone/Internet.

Not sure if that is dated info though.

How will they issue the refund with you not being there? I can see why you're pissed off as I would be too but I think they need your card to refund you.

They can process a refund an over the phone by putting the card details in the PDQ machine refund option.

Our store can't you have to have the card/phone there.

If you have returned the item and are down £250, I'd be asking to speak to the manager as I'm sure they can look back through their receipts and issue the refund by taking your card details over the phone, or contacting their payment processing company and giving the authorisation code. If they won't do that, I would look at doing a chargeback with your bank if the payment was done on a credit card.

Depends on the card processor and the merchant agreement as to whether or not refunds (or sales) can be processed over the phone. My old provider allowed transactions taken over the phone. My new one doesn't (there is no facility on the terminal to enter a card number at all) but I can log on to the merchant portal, find the transaction and click on the refund button which is even better.

Was the person on phone who told you ‘we’ll see what we can do if you come back’ the manager/owner, or the retail assistant??! How cheeky!!

Catza · 14/08/2024 10:52

Call their head office if it is a chain. If it's an independent, call and ask to speak to the manager.

Call and ask for a manager.

At this point I'd be expecting the full refund plus extra as a goodwill gesture
