I was shopping today in Iceland, I love their ice cream, and the cashier asked if I had my bonus card as I was entitled to the 10% discount on a Tuesday. I've just been told by a friend that it's for over 60,s and I'm only 54😫

How old was the cashier? Younger folk tend to have zero clue how old anyone over about 35 is.

And I'm 66, but often see people and guess that their age might be anywhere between 50 and 70, depending on how well they've looked after themselves, etc.

But here's an even better story for you. 24 years ago, my (also female) partner and I went to look at houses we might buy. In one*, the vendor asked me if I was my partner's mother. She's 2 and a half years older than me (I was 42, she 44). I've never actually got over that one!

*No, we did not buy it.

Oh that did make me giggle!! The cashier was about the same age as me but that's only a guess, she could be 25😂

Well I agree that it's very difficult to tell people's ages.
But I think the cashier was extremely tactless. If she'd been told to advertise the bonus card she could have said something along the lines of It's a pity you aren't entitled to a bonus card because we have this promotion on today.

pyjamalife · 13/08/2024 16:19

A quick Google says you have to be 18 years or older to register for a Bonus card. As well as 10% off on Tuesdays with it for over 60s.

So anyone can have a bonus card, maybe the special offer for all that day was 10% off on that ice cream? Or was it more items and the over 60s discount she meant?

Not shopped in Iceland for a fair while so not sure, just hopeful for you.

God bless you but no, she definitely meant the over 60s discount because she said if I ordered online I should place the order on Tuesdays.

Some over 60s don't look over 60, she maybe thought you just looked really good for your age. I wouldn't take it too personally.

purpleme12 · 13/08/2024 16:40

The other month I was with my mate, (same age 39) her kid (12) and my kid (10).
Someone assumed that she was the mum and I was the big sister of the family!

It’s like Think 25 in reverse - then, you’re trying to catch the under 18s by asking anyone who might be 25 or under.

This is Ask 45 - anyone within 15 years of the over 60s discount 😉

It's a new take on people being offended at being asked for ID, that's for sure.

You could actually be right. My friend is 45 and was asked in Iceland if she was entitled to the discount!

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 13/08/2024 17:15

I took my mum on a tourist train a couple of years ago on holiday in Spain. We both got given seniors' rate automatically, no questions asked. I wasn't even 45 then 😄

I went to a hospital appointment with my sister and the Dr asked me if I was her mum.My sister is only 5 years younger than me. I'm still not over it.
