If blackberries were growing in your garden…

Would you pick and eat them? The actual bush they’re growing on nobody owns and it’s behind our back fence, but it’s overgrown and has curved over our fence. I’d say there are probably easily 50 or more ripe blackberries within reach.

DH has said a dog might have done its business on the roots of the bush… (😂) so he’s not so sure about it. I can’t see a problem, surely no different from fruit that you buy from the supermarket.

YABU - don’t eat them
YANBU - pick them and eat them!! winning

Yes. Eat them! Free berries!

Turophilic · 12/08/2024 21:37

Anything above waist height is fair game!

Abigaillovesholidays · 12/08/2024 21:38

Of course you would!!

Createausername1970 · 12/08/2024 21:38

I would make a apple and blackberry crumble!

FetchAPail · 12/08/2024 21:38

Of course. Wash them.

Ask DH if he knows where supermarket berries are grown...

johann12 · 12/08/2024 21:38

I'm a bit funny about raspberries and blackberries anyway. I pick them apart to check for bugs before I eat them (from the shop) and don't buy organic because of this.

napody · 12/08/2024 21:38

The ROOTS of the bush?! 😂
Does he know what manure is, and that it's used as fertiliser?
The 'dog might have peed on it' thing is people worrying one might have peed direct on the berries.

DelurkingAJ · 12/08/2024 21:38

DS2 ate the ripe blackberries in our front hedge this morning. If we had a dog (or next door did…we’re at the bottom of a cul de sac) then I might only let him eat the ones at head height.

K37529 · 12/08/2024 21:39

I definitely would, blackberries are so expensive.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 12/08/2024 21:39

This has happened to us! NDN (very odd) suddenly disappeared a few months ago, house already pretty run down , garden is now wild the blackberries that have crossed the alley and hang over our fence I take and wash before eating them and DH trims the brambles back. Builder turned up this week to reno and has promised he'll sort the garden. All kinds of animals urinate on the ground plants grow in its not on the berries! Just rinse the fruit before eating

DreadPirateRobots · 12/08/2024 21:39

Haven't you ever gone blackberrying? Bloody hell.

Catandsquirrel · 12/08/2024 21:40

Why is it a problem if a dog shat on the roots?

MyDogsPaws · 12/08/2024 21:40

Yes definitely eat them. I pick berries all the time amd eat them without even washing them as long as they are high off the ground. You are a Hunter gatherer evolutionarily speaking, so gather away!

Notquitethere60 · 12/08/2024 21:40

Yes I eat them directly from the bush. Don’t even wash them- and I’m still alive!

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 12/08/2024 21:40

They're full of vitamin C. Also blackberry and apple crumble is heaven.

AgreeableDragon · 12/08/2024 21:41

We picked 2 kg of wild blackberries yesterday. They are really good this year.
Of course you can eat them, it's free food!

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 12/08/2024 21:42

Your DH is a bit thick isn't he?

Onehotday · 12/08/2024 21:42

I'd make blackberry jam.

No, he’s not, he half said it in jest hence the laughing emoji. You are a bit rude tho.

He is a bit thick though. To even joke about not picking fresh fruit. It’s a bit…eh??

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 12/08/2024 21:44

Just nothing low down
Love going foraging (in locations I'm allowed!) for fresh berries to make pies and crumbles etc this time of year

TwinklyAmberOrca · 12/08/2024 21:44

We made blackberry and apple crumble this weekend!

Just WASH them!

rainbowbee · 12/08/2024 21:44

If no one owns it, of course! Pick as many as you can to eat fresh if you like, but also to freeze and make blackberry and apple crumbles in the winter months.
Your DH does understand how things grow, right? 🤣
