Recommendations for laptop Y8

Posting for traffic. My son is about to go into Y8 and I'd like to get him a laptop to help with his studies (He has SEN). I have asked the school to let me know what he uses at school but no luck. If you have a child in secondary and they have a laptop could you recommend any? It is strictly for school and not gaming (🤣) any pointers would be welcome. I'd like a decent quality one but nothing fancy like a mac book etc. a standard decent no frills one. Any tips would be most welcome.

DD had a MacBook for school but we ended uo buying her an iPad Air last year. Much easier to use and more convenient - the ability to write notes on it with the Apple Pencil is also very useful. Better than using paper notes which inevitably get lost. Most schools seem to be going down this route rather than laptops these days.

A Chromebook would be your best bet for a no-frills cheaper option.
If you live within reasonable distance I'd go to PC World or similar and ask their advice
