Where did the white lines on the roads go?

The ones that divide lanes of same direction and opposite direction traffic. Ideally on the verge-edge side of A-roads too to sort of tell you where road ends & verge might begin. I know it's not just me, my young adult sons say they also can't see the damn lines. There are so many stretches of road where the white lines have faded or are long overdue repainting. Today I had glare in my eyes too, and was driving across a huge junction trying to find my lane on other side... I veered into the lane to my right a little because my guess was off & literally any lane lines there were super faded on top of the road glare ... this was on a 3 lane wide carriageway. Eeek.

Would anyone like to commiserate?

This is the UK. At this stage, I guess doing anything right would be akin to rearranging the chairs on the Titanic.

They went off for a tea break but forgot to leave a note saying 'Back in ten'.

mitogoshi · 11/08/2024 23:18

They have moved here, our council has been on a painting spree, also curbing edges where the verge was over growing. Apparently they "need" to use this money for painting (rather than fixing the pot holes)

Yup. As I said to DH as we rolled off the ferry at Portsmouth straight into a massive fucking queue, everything in this country is just fucking shit

Kornvallmo · 11/08/2024 23:22

So shit @FusionChefGeoff getting off the ferry on this side is so depressing now.

File alongside, what happened to cat's eyes?

MerchSwyddEfrog · 11/08/2024 23:28

The cats eyes have gone too. It make nighttime driving very difficult when there are no street lamps, no cats eyes and very faded white lines.

AlexaON · 11/08/2024 23:32

Totally agree OP.
Add to that all the punitive road restrictions (low traffic neighbourhoods, 24 hour bus lanes, yellow boxes just before a pedestrian crossing so you have to either have people honking at you if you’re hesitant or risk a fine if the lights change) and it’s a miracle anyone dares to drive any more.

(I walk or get the bus most of the time for all the above reasons.)

UnctuousUnicorns · 11/08/2024 23:32

Oh no, we don't need cat's eyes anymore, as we have reflective paint in the middle of the road.

Oh, wait...🙄

Weatehonoured · 11/08/2024 23:33

The white lines are pretty much none existent, it's just appalling

DickEmery · 11/08/2024 23:37

There may be some on the left hand side of some roads but you'd never know because of the jungle style plant life growing over them. UK now looks like that photo of the Sarajevo olympic bobsleigh track that was doing the rounds 15 years ago.

...and all the potholes, which you can't see because it is pissing down and they are full of water so they just look like wet road.

Is that why they took out cats eyes? OMG !!
