CAR Jeep Renegade or VW Golf

I would like to replace my 10y old VW golf with Jeep Renegade mild hybrid.

Am I mad?

I mean I had the Golf from new and it's a great car. My only 2 issues are a) it's getting very expensive to run (diesel, insurance, tax, repairs...) b) I really like the idea of a tentbox which wouldl look silly on the Golf.

We are very outdoorsy but live about 2.5 hours away from the lake district. So that would save on B&B's or pitching a tent.

Alternatively DH would ditch his little Polo and get an Range Rover, which is more expensive... and I don't like them.

The Jeep on the other hand is ugly & cheap = just a box on wheels, but seems very practical for the things we want to do. I've taken one for a test drive, all fine and space wise it's ok.

If it's relevant, we have one teen DC and 3 dogs. Dogs aren't allowed in the Golf due to me being a bit precious about it.

I can tell you one thing, don’t get a bloody Range. They are nothing but trouble. We just got rid of ours which over the last 5 years spent more time in the garage than on the road and cost easily 20k in repairs. They are also very expensive to insure as, apparently, they are easily broken into and are a primary target for car thieves. Can’t speak for the jeep. I guess it would depend on where you live. It’s all very well to go camping a couple of times a year (month) but if you live in a city and have to drive to work etc, I’d be more worried about parking this bus every day than saving a bit on B&B.

I've got a hybrid Renegade. I love it - and I love the way it looks too! But I think it's quite impractical. The boot is tiny and the range, even with petrol is only about 250 miles. You get about 210 miles of petrol and about 30 miles of electric if it's full.

@Catza thankyou, it just confirmed what I think. It would be DH's car...
We are very active and I am looking at camping not just for hiking, but also for going back to competing in dog agility with one small dog. So it's a lifestyle thing throughout the year...

@propertealady I agree on size, but honestly, the inside isn't bigger/ smaller than the Golf. I'm semi rual and yes I have to commute to work, but we do have a big carpark that's half empty 😅.
Yes, I don't think the hybrid is for me due to limited range, that's why I am looking at the mild hybrid, in the hope it's better.

Obviously it's not going to have the range of my trusted Golf diesel engine, which is amazing on long motorway runs.
