Holes in T-Shirts driving me mad

Decoratingdilema · 08/08/2024 12:44

What the eff is going on. Every single t-shirt I've got has got holes in them right around my tummy area.

Is this because I've got a tummy (size 16) or is this because I'm buying cheap t-shirts? I'd hate to invest in much more expensive clothes only for the same to happen

YABU - lose some weight and it won't happen
YANBU - it's effing annoying

The general given is that it's either from rubbing against belt/button or kitchen surfaces.

So stop going in the kitchen. 😄

BananaBender · 08/08/2024 12:46

Rubbing against the kitchen bench? Especially if it’s a marble, granite or other stone type of bench.

JackGrealishsCalves · 08/08/2024 12:46

I have the same with ds tee shirts but in the sleeves.
Do you tumble dry? DH's tee shirts wear out quicker due to this

PetrichorSoul · 08/08/2024 12:48

Your button is rubbing your T-shirt when you’re staying at the counter or sitting at a desk

oh clearly that's it - quartz worktop and 5 year old twins who think I'm their personal snack slave 😂as well as preparing 3 meals per day

oddly my husband doesn't have holes in his t-shirts mmmmmmmm 🤔

It happens to me too!

I put it down to the button on my jeans when I’m driving or rubbing up against the kitchen counter doing dishes.

It didn’t happen to my clothes 20 years ago so either clothing quality has gone down (it has) or my housekeeping hours have gone up (not by very much),

nope never tumble dry clothes - just towels & bedding (when they can't go on the line)

Happens to me too. I have learnt to be more careful about not leaning against the kitchen worktop (probably better for my posture), particularly if I'm wearing a belt.

Chocolateorange22 · 08/08/2024 12:55

Yes granite kitchen counters in my case. I just whip off my belt, unfortunately DH thinks he's getting some when that happens. Poor bloke 🤣

DaveWatts · 08/08/2024 12:56

Yep for me it was metal jeans buttons against a granite worktop. Have had to stop wearing jeans in the house!

aodirjjd · 08/08/2024 13:05

Mine did this and it was my ancient washing machine.

Aussiegold · 08/08/2024 13:07

I have this and it's wrecked so many clothes. I don't wear jeans when cooking, only joggers or elastic waist trousers (fashion icon that I am), old t shirts, no problem, brand new M&S ones or bloody Benetton, only fit for the bin.

Don't remember this problem before the new kitchen 2 years ago..........

I asked someone in clothing retail a few years ago about this. It is due to the poor quality cotton that most clothes are made from, which rubs through much quickly than it used to.

Devonchills · 08/08/2024 13:09

Its definitely the buttons on jeans, I wear jeggins now and no holes!

WickieRoy · 08/08/2024 13:11

Kitchen counters here too. I make the effort to step back a little and it stops. Then forget and all my clothes have holes again. Sigh.

Snozwanger · 08/08/2024 13:13

There is a gadget that supposedly prevents these holes from appearing holebuttoncover.com

sunburnandsangria · 08/08/2024 13:18

This stopped happening when I stopped wearing jeans. I've been wearing skirts and joggers - so nothing with bumpy fastens, buttons or buckles.

Dramalady52 · 08/08/2024 13:26

I was going to ask if you had cats? I get holes in my t shirts and put it down to claws snagging in the material when I'm sat on. Don't wear jeans. But t shirt quality definitely seems to have gone down as well.

Butterworths · 08/08/2024 13:30

We had mystery holes in bedding and tea towels when I was a child - my mum was driven insane by it. 40 years later my brother admitted that he used to go around snipping them with scissors. He can't remember why, he just said he "liked it". He is now a father of two and a very senior accountant and (as far as I am aware) no longer snips holes in unattended fabrics.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 08/08/2024 13:34

For me I think it’s wearing a t shirt over jeans and then the car seatbelt rubbing. It only ever happens when I’m wearing a t-shirt over jeans and I go out in the car. The tensions from the seatbelt rubs against the material and he button/top of the zip of the jeans - it’s blooming infuriating.

S00LA · 08/08/2024 13:37

I NEVER get these holes, I don’t wear a belt and I always wear an apron when doing anything in the kitchen, so the cause is one or both of these things .

I do everything else that is suggested as a cause
eg have kids and granite worktops , wear cheap tee shirts and jeans , use a tumble dryer and washing machine

Decoratingdilema · 08/08/2024 14:09

mmmmm this is so interesting.......

I do sometimes wear jeans with a metal button but mainly it's leggings (I know so stylish)

I do lean on my kitchen counter though and we eat all of our meals at the island.

I don't have cats but I do have a 11 year old springerdoodle but honestly he's much better behaved than the kids.

I'm wondering if this happens too if you tuck your t-shirt in? Or maybe like @S00LA I should take to wearing a apron in the kitchen

OP posts:
cosietea · 08/08/2024 15:33

I thought this was caused by my cats

murasaki · 08/08/2024 15:41

I'd assumed cats and the washing machine as I definitely don't lean on the counter, which is vinyl or something anyway. You all.must cook/prep in odd ways!
