Got some reduced cantaloupe and honeydew melon slices from Sainsburys with todays date on. Me and my 5 YO had 1/2 bits until I realised they didn't taste great. They looked fine and were not soft or anything like that, bit of a starting to go off smell though. I have binned them but we did have a couple slices of it. how likely that we will get sick? feel like a bad mum.

0% chance.

mrsmalcolmreynolds · 07/08/2024 22:30

Very little chance indeed!

They probably started fermenting, so would have very little alcohol in. I can't see that making you sick.

Why would you get sick?

Shea1998 · 07/08/2024 22:52

thank you. I read somewhere that it can cause listeria so I got worried.

Listeria and "going off" are not connected. Food spoilage and food poisoning are caused by different types of bacteria. General biochemical breakdown of stored food often doesn't involve any bacteria at all.
It's very very unlikely you'll be ill.

What time did you eat it at @Shea1998

You'll be fine.

You’ll be fine I’m sure…

PizzaFecker · 07/08/2024 23:18

Definitely death imminent. Make sure you have your will sorted

thank you. I read somewhere that it can cause listeria so I got worried.

Pre-prepped foods ( including cut melon) can harbour listeria but I don’t think the use-by issue is too pertinent to that. I guess if it had listeria it might have multiplied, but I don’t think it would not have it then develop it as its close to use-by.

Shea1998 · 07/08/2024 23:20

Ok, thanks everyone

Maybe wear a nappy just in case.
