Fruit in a restaurant dressed crab salad ?

We went to a seaside restaurant tonight and I ordered the dressed crab salad.
The salad came with strawberries, raspberries and blackberries. Also a physalis.

Would you find this strange? It was nice, but I’ve never had that combo before so it was fairly unusual. Just wondered if anyone has had similar in the past?

I would find this strange and disappointing as I hate fruit in a salad. Fruit is for puddings. I can’t stand sweet and savoury together so I’d be really annoyed tbh.

Sounds lovely to me, I'm a chef & use stone fruits a lot. Though I'm surprised it didn't mention it on the menu, it's not for everyone.

What else was in the salad?

I had a chicken salad when I was in LA which had strawberries in it....I absolutely love fruit in savoury dishes

Ineffable23 · 07/08/2024 20:14

I think it sounds like it could work. I had a fab salad with mixed berries, toasted goats cheese, walnuts, oil, and quince paste and it was delicious. However, I agree that it's not universally popular so I am surprised it wasn't mentioned on the menu.

I'm allergic to crab so never had it/don't know how the combo tastes, but crab and strawberry salad is pretty common isn't it? I've seen it on menus and in recipe books.

The Californians don’t seem to be able to cope with a salad without blueberries or strawberries in it.

i’m not a fan and would find it particularly odd that the menu didn’t specify it.

Wahine24 · 07/08/2024 20:45

Was it stated? I'm allergic to strawberries! It's an odd combination in my head

I have nothing at all against fruit in a salad and the ones you name are all seasonal so that's nice.

I remember one of the first things we made in Cookery class at secondary school in 1973 was a Winter Salad, which contained apple. Come to think of it, doesn't a Waldorf Salad contain apple? That's pretty mainstream.

purplecorkheart · 07/08/2024 21:09

I am not a fan of berries so would not be happy unless it had been stated on the menu.

I hate ordering food and getting random ingredients not listed on menu. (Corriander I am looking at you).

I love crab and would be a bit non plussed if it arrived with fruit without a warning in the menu. The term salad does not immediately suggest the inclusion of fruit and I feel it is sensible to mention if this is the case.

TheOccupier · 07/08/2024 21:12

I'd put citrus fruit in a crab/seafood salad, but not berries.

Apple is not unusual with a crab salad
