Everyone going on holidays

Atetheentirebagofnachos · 05/08/2024 22:52

I’ve seen it more than ever this year on Sm, everyone seems to be off on lovely holidays, I mean, it’s great, but thought most people were skint.

OP posts:
SwingTheMonkey · 05/08/2024 23:17

Not everyone is skint!

focacciamuffin · 05/08/2024 23:22

Some people are skint. Most aren’t.

Atetheentirebagofnachos · 05/08/2024 23:23

I thought most were with the higher costs of everything-food, bills etc

Your own observations with respect to holidays would seem to suggest otherwise.

Clearly you were wrong

SprinkleOfSunak · 05/08/2024 23:36

We’re definitely skint and are not going on holiday for a second year running.

We are the only people I know who are not going on a holiday this year, and at least three quarters of them are going on 2-3 holidays in total.

Gamezup · 05/08/2024 23:37

I cannot afford a holiday. Any spare money (what little there is) I put aside for a rainy day. Things ain't great but then there's a lot of people a lot worse off!

Stop living your life vicariously through others @Atetheentirebagofnachos

Also “I thought everybody was skint”…

Who are you? Who is “everybody” to you? Is your network affluent or is everyone on their uppers?

Did you know there’s a “Chat” board?

So many reasons to say YABVU

I'm skint. End of every month there's no money for savings.
But, I need a holiday. I've had 3 years of shit from a relationship, family, work, housing, everything has been shit.
So I've booked a week in the sun and am paying it off monthly. Its a stretch, but perfectly doable. And it will be worth it.

Good for you, I hope you have the best time!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 06/08/2024 00:00

Quite skint but paid for holiday over the course of the year. Will self cater.

Fifteentreefrogs · 06/08/2024 00:05

Some people are better at going on holiday for cheap than others..
I have people often commenting on how much I seem to go on holiday...
Once one of these people joined us on a city mini break..
It was a 3 day trip and she brought £400, expected to eat out every meal and also buy souvenirs everywhere we went..
I soon realised why she couldn't understand how we afforded to go on holiday so much.

Last holiday we went on.. family of 4. Was to Florence.
Cost 1500 including everything. Because we only went for 5 days. I extensively researched it, booked well in advance self catering, shopped around for individual flight deals, rented a car, researched free activities, made pack lunches etc etc
And I had saved up the money for it over the year before.
So we got to go to Italy and the kids had some wonderful experiences but it was all done on the cheapest of cheap.

Why did you think that? Some people are, most aren't. Lots still able to go on holiday.

More people are skint than in the last few years, but that doesn't mean everyone is by a long shot!

If 10% of people were skint 3 years ago, and that number has doubled now, that still leaves 80% of people able to afford a holiday.**

**All statistics are entirely pulled out of my arse.

MillyMollyMandHey · 06/08/2024 00:35

Most people aren’t skint. It’s been wildly exaggerated by the media.

This is my situation too. We’ve been paying it monthly since September. My life is hard on a day-to-day basis and I need a break. I’ll come back to the same commitments but for ten days I’m escaping.

FlamingWheelieBinofDespair · 06/08/2024 00:39

Not everyone is skint. I’ve never been better off; not saying that to show off, just an example.

Lancrelady80 · 06/08/2024 01:08

Either paying off monthly as pps have said, or on credit cards. But I know what you mean, it feels like that around me too. Just have to keep reminding myself that some of those jaunting off on hols are paying in excess of £2k per week to stay next door to me (we live in a lovely part of the country and within 20mins of gorgeous beaches) So we are having same kind of holiday as them, but for free. Hoping to get on a plane within next 18 months though.

Depends on their outgoings surely.
If someone works but they have no mortgage /rent and no loans or credit cards or debt and don't need childcare anymore even a minimum wage full time job leaves lots of pennies to play with.

coronafiona · 06/08/2024 03:58

My holidays are usually abroad in the sun. This year we are sc in a caravan, it's less a than half the price. Trying my best to pay off debts and cut DDebits has meant breaking even each month instead of OD. Holiday was paid for monthly.

Fairyliz · 06/08/2024 07:05

Well yes if you read the media/MN then yes everyone is skint and everyone with children is living in poverty.
I think they have to exaggerate everything for ‘news’.
Think about the weather forecast; it’s never just an ordinary day for the time of year. No it’s always hotter/colder/wetter/dryer/more windy etc et

LlynTegid · 06/08/2024 07:09

I expect the number of people who don't go on holidays every year is more than anyone would estimate.

Spectre8 · 06/08/2024 07:14

No kids just me all my disposable income to spend on myself which is holidays 💁‍♀️ ill have had 6 by the end of the year. Conversely neighbours with kids were in garden moaning they can't get away cos nursery fees have gone up and also they want to extend their house so need to save up... I mean they could go away if they didn't extend their house ...cmso sometimes it's priorities and choices ppl make

We are on holiday right now. A holiday I've saved for all year. And when we get home I will start saving for the next one.

It's doable for me because it's a priority. I work hard all year so this is my reward to myself and my DC's. I prioritise our summer holiday over other things as it's important to us..
