Leaving things on view in the car… AIBU?

What is a big deal vs what isn’t?

I’ve left a tenner on view in my car and debating whether it’s really worth going outside to retrieve it at this time. I wouldn’t want someone to smash the window for it, but surely not over a little amount of cash. I am operating on not very much sleep and DH is confused and thinks it’s not a big deal.

YABU - leave the tenner it will be absolutely fine
YANBU - I’d not leave cash or any valuables on view at all

My OH is obsessive about this. He would have gone outside by now and retrieved it without doubt

He puts coats over things in the back, even basic shopping. Makes it look like we're carrying around a dead body on the back seat all the time

We periodically get chancers robbing cars overnight, I'd not take the risk.

yesornothatisthequestion · 05/08/2024 22:12

I'd 100% go and move that out of sight.

yesornothatisthequestion · 05/08/2024 22:12

Pressed send too soon. DM had her car window smashed for a stuffed Garfield toy once!

FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant · 05/08/2024 22:12

A tenner is a little amount to you, but a lot to someone who thinks nothing of breaking a car window to steal something.

Tbh depends where you live and parking situation. Where I currently live I wouldn't worry, as it's a very very low crime area to the point most people don't bother locking doors where I used to live I wouldn't leave a pound on display as the car would be broken into in a heartbeat.

coldcallerbaiter · 05/08/2024 22:13

It is mainly if you are in a very bad area. Some parts of London for example. I lived somewhere where kids on bikes constantly patrolled and looked, Otherwise generally nobody is even looking in your car, you would have to be really unlucky.

MaltipooMama · 05/08/2024 22:14

I would move it too. I remember, years ago, returning to a car park after work to find my window has been smashed in for the arsehole to take about 50 pence worth of pennies and two pence pieces left in the little compartment at the front. If people are desperate enough for money, any amount will suffice no matter how small.

Doio · 05/08/2024 22:15

We’re in the suburbs in the north, but occasionally do get posts on the community group about people trying car door handles and sheds etc. It’s not every day and generally it’s a safe area, but all the same.

"A very bad area. Some parts of London, for example."

Absolutely pathetic post.

It’s not poverty, there are plenty of poor people that wouldn’t. They are scumbags, and I wish I could deal with them my way

Huh? I am from London, I am not going to name particular areas. Dope.

The sooner you go and get it, OP, the sooner you'll be able to go to sleep. 😊

That’s true. Shoes going on now!

I never leave anything on view in the car. Of course you can afford to lose a tenner, but just think of the cost and utter faff of getting the window replaced!

You're a dope, singling out "some parts of London", as if that means anything. There are areas everywhere where you wouldn't leave money on display. You might as well say "some parts of Scotland" or "some parts of Italy". Ridiculous comment.

You cannot single out unless you name them, ie. Single them out. Read what you write before pressing post.

😂I'm like your DH. My DH drives me mad as he thinks nothing of leaving a tablet etc on full display.

Move it, OP. Will take a couple of mins at most so worth it not to have the risk or worry. Honestly you could have taken the time you've posted to actually do it!

Lurkingandlearning · 06/08/2024 10:46

Yes someone would break into your car for a tenner and would expensive cause damage while doing it.

It might even be more worth their while than some more expensive stuff because it’s cash in their hand. “Stuff” has to be sold online which takes time or taken to someone who deals in stolen goods and they pay very little as they know the thief is desperate, usually for drugs but it seems increasingly also for food etc
