To think this was weird ? (not police bashing!)

I've been at a family BBQ this afternoon and left a bit ago.i wear glasses to drive but don't need them otherwise so had left them in the car.

Heading back to the car and my BIL (who is a police traffic office) stopped me and made a semi joke about me getting a lift home because I shouldn't be driving without my glasses and how he should breathalyze me (I don't drink for religious reasons and I'm also seven months pregnant so doubly wouldn't be drinking!). He didn't stop going on about it until my husband told him to pack it in.

He was a bit drunk tbh but saw me pull up with my glasses on and knows I don't drink! I'm feeling a bit weirded out by it tbh and I'm not sure what to make of it ! He played it off like he was joking but I'm not sure!

Aibu?

You are not sure if he was joking? I mean, it wasn't funny if that's what you mean but since he saw you wearing glasses earlier and knows you don't drink, I'd say it was definitely an attempt at a joke.

I don’t think it was anything to do with you and your glasses. I think it should be translated as…

I’m traffic police
I know everything
I have the power to arrest people
I’m allowed to drive fast, faster than you
I’m so fucking powerful and know the rules about driving in glasses
Hey, did I mention I’m a police officer?
I drive very powerful cars
I can take down peasants like you
Ha ha! Thanks for coming. I work in law enforcement.
Don’t forget your specs!
Oh yeah and I can breathalyse you if I wanted to!
Yeah yeah I know you’re tea total and pregnant, but just to let you know I could if I wanted to.
My car has blue lights and goes woooooo, whooo.

He sounds like a twat on a power trip.

I think moveoverdarlin has nailed it.

Needed to feel big and important for whatever reason - YANBU
He wasn’t trying it on with your DH - he really needed to feel he had put you in your place.

It was weirdly intense and didn't feel like a joke but he was trying to play it off as one, iyswim?

Sometimes the tiniest bit of power goes to a person’s head…

He could if he wanted to... Yeah, that sums it up. Like he was putting me on warning or in my place.

Yeah, sums it up nicely.

Even my husband is still a bit WTF about it and he's usually so laid back he's horizontal.

Bil is usually decent so I have no idea what got into him today but it's creeped me out. We're meant to visiting again next week and now I really don't want to go !

Well if he's usually decent and the behaviour surprised you why aren't you just chalking it up to him being a bit of a drunken twat? Happens to the best of us. Normally friends just humour you, tell you to pack it in and move on.

Restinggoddess · 04/08/2024 21:23

I wouldn’t be making another visit - DH can say WTAF to him at some point. concentrate on enjoying your pregnancy without this twattery

Some men are weird around pregnant women, from your post I don’t know if he is your sisters husband or your husband brother ( doesn’t really matter) or whether he has kids / trying for kids etc - none of this is an excuse / important ( and even when he says ‘I was drunk’ he has shown you who he is)

Rise above it - this is on him not you ( for whatever reason you may not even find out)

Enjoy your impending arrival and your DH

mackerelabashed · 04/08/2024 22:43

He's my husband's brother.

It's really set me on edge, probably because he had hold of my arm for a bit and it made me feel really vulnerable!

Some drunks think that they're hilarious and won't hear anything to the contrary.
