Buying a lottery ticket for someones birthday?

Would you put a lottery ticket inside a bday card for someone and how would you feel if they won?
Have you done this?

Was just talking with someone about an upcoming birthday next week and they said they were going to post a card to this person with a ticket inside?

Yes I have done and would do again.

Id be really pleased for them if they won.

I do it quite often but scratchcards not lottery tickets. Biggest win someone has had was £50. I'm really happy they won! Hard if it is a six figure sum or something though.

We did it for DS 18th birthday. Sadly he didn't win but if we had it was his, once you give it as a gift you have no claim on the winnings

As per usual, the first reply nails it!

I know someone who does this and they buy a ticket with the same numbers because of that unlikely possibility.

I put a scratch card in my kids stockings and they love it. I can honestly say that I’d be pleased for them if they won but their siblings might feel a bit jealous

I used to put them in stockings at Christmas but don't any more after something I saw on here years ago where one sibling had won a large amount and it just caused family grief with very strong opposing views on whether they should split it.

At the risk of being 'that person', is that not illegal? Unless your kids are over 18 of course...

We do scratch cards on the dinner table at Christmas. We have a pre agreement. Anything up to £100 is yours, above that it’s shared.

How would it be illegal?! It's illegal for an under 18 to buy them, and an adult would have to claim any winnings, but there's no law stopping a child scratching off the foil!!

Because it's gambling. Same way as it's illegal to go into a bookies & put a bet on for someone underage. If you're buying it for them & giving them the winnings, that's illegal.

Ah yes, but that would be the using their money to buy it, so they are still buying it, just with you as the middle man. If you're buying it with your own money and choosing to give them the winnings that's not illegal.

Rainbowqueeen · 02/08/2024 10:18

I’m happy to do it and fully understand that I have no claim on the winnings.

I would never do it for a group of people eg at Xmas in case someone did win big and there was ill feeling
