To have served food that a fly had been on!

Here’s the picture. The pasta is al dente, pasta sauce is cooked but husband and adult son are slightly held up so I dump it all in one pan, give it a stir, switch it off and cover it. I then go set the table. Husband and son come in a short while later and so I head back to the pan. I notice there is a gap and a fly has got into the food, still very much alive! There’s nothing else thawed to eat, cupboards are pretty bare so I dig out the fly, brought the pan back to the boil and served it. I feel pretty shit harbouring this secret though they really enjoyed their dinner.

It’ll be fine.

Longdueachange · 31/07/2024 23:20

I wouldn't eat it - but what they don't know won't hurt 🤣

Thesecretingredientiscrime · 31/07/2024 23:21

Chuck the bit it was on, forget about it. Yum.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 31/07/2024 23:22

Now imagine all the food you haven’t noticed the fly on.

It won’t kill them or you. 🤣

ThinWomansBrain · 31/07/2024 23:23

as long as you didn't saturate it with fly spray you'll be fine.

GraceUnderwire · 31/07/2024 23:31

I probably wouldn’t have eaten it and my general rule is if wouldn’t eat it, I wouldn’t serve it to other people.
If it had just landed on the food, that’s one thing. If I had to “dig it out” 🤢.
So, my question is, did you eat any? And if not, would you have been happy to?

If I saw a fly land on food I would throw only that bit out - but the fly was stuck in the pan so all over it.

I think they (flys) eat by vomiting onto the food to digest it and then sucking it up - and it's feet were all over dog shit earlier today so no I wouldn't eat it or feed it to others.

Yes, they do.

Thanks all, I can happily report that we’re all still alive.

The environment is full of bacteria which organically gets into the food you eat, and I happily eat the flesh and innards of any animal which has allowed itself to be domesticated and plenty which haven’t. Animals aren’t exactly clean. Some microscopic fly vomit or fecal particles are neither here nor there, in the grander scheme of things.
