Where do you charge your hybrid car...

...if you can't plug it in at home? I have a charging lead that plugs straight in to the wall but my house is too far from the road to charge. It's a hybrid so only gets 35 miles out of each charge. Do you have lots of charging points near you? Annoyingly I have one a 2 min drive from my house but it's the wrong kind of connector (I need type 2 or CCS). I bought the car because I like it and it was a decent price so the electric is just a bonus but it'd be nice to use it!

There are some chargers at my office and my partners office. Also at the supermarket and shopping centre but those are free to use so never have a space!

We used to have a hybrid which my husband charged at his work and when convenient we’d charge it using chargers in town if we needed to be nearby.

Changed to fully electric last year and have to say it’s nice to not have to think about getting it charged up so often. Now my husband just charges it at work every two or three weeks and we’re rarely close to empty.

There are two kinds: mild hybrids and plug-in hybrids. The first kind are self-charging but have very small batteries. The second kind can be self-charging but you don’t get any real fuel economy boost from the hybrid bit. They only offer benefits if you plug them in. Based on the 35 mile electric range OP has the second kind so would benefit from plugging it in.

This really isn’t helpful of me. But I only ever charge my hybrid from home. I’ve never thought to charge it out and about as it’s not really necessary for me.

Mild hybrids - self charging, but the electric motor merely boosts the petrol engine
Full hybrids - self charging, with battery large enough that the car can travel purely using the electric motor. If you’re driving around town your entire journey may be electric.

Plug in hybrid person here, we mainly charge at home but have used / use supermarkets, shopping centre car parks, park and ride car parks, we have a m&s carpark near us with charging points too. Worth also checking for lamp posts you can use too although that very much depends on geographic area of the country.

Plug in hybrids/full hybrids are different terms for the same thing, not that it really matters. As you say, they can run on battery power alone for meaningful distances so for local journeys you might never need to use the engine.

To the person who said that their plug-in hybrid can self-charge: yes it can, but if you don’t plug it in you’re carrying round several hundred kilos of pointlessly large battery.

Full hybrids self charge, they don't plug in. I was wrong on why you can actually run on electric when you can't with mild hybrids - it's not the battery is any larger, it's to do with the drivetrain.

I have a full hybrid. It is great and I do the vast majority of miles on electric.

But I can charge it on drive. If I wasn't able to charge on drive I wouldn't have bought it.

A full electric would probably be better if you don't have on drive charging because then if you are only doing low mileage you would only have to charge once a week say. But I doubt it would be cheaper than petrol because charging on commercial charges is expensive.

I personally can't afford an EV but if I could I would. There are loads of charging points in my town, I would be happy to leave it charging and go home for a bit. There are quite a lot of people here with their own charging points and sometimes they go over the pavement, I'm fine with this as most people walk in daylight and the covers are reflective. I travel 380 miles to Scotland sometimes and that concerns me, a friend with parents in the Scottish Isles had to charge his car three times on the journey and he said the journey was very long and tedious because of that.
