Is this a UTI?

I have a CONSTANT urge to wee, as in the second I stand up from having been the urge is there again. I wouldn’t say it hurts to go but there is discomfort, however it’s an internal feeling of discomfort as opposed to burning when urine passes etc
have I got a UTI? And what’s the quickest way to get rid? It started overnight and is driving me insane already 😂

It could be. If you're a woman aged 16-64 you can get treatment using the pharmacy first scheme.

Flossiecotton · 30/07/2024 06:52

lots of warm water with lemon juice to start with, as much as you can manage to drink. This will flush you out. I get this a lot . I find it helps prevent further attacks if you make it a daily habit. Then contact the pharmacy.

I had loads of UTI's when I was younger. Pee into a cup and give it a smell. If it smells vanilla then it's not got bacteria in it. If it smells bad/sort of beefy then it's got bacteria in it and you need antibiotics.

Sounds mad I know.

If your urine is clear and has no bad/beefy smell then you are fine.

If it's cloudy but no bad/beefy smell it might be cystitis which is inflamation but no bacteria so you don't need antibiotics. However if it's cloudy I would keep checking in case the smell appears.

Hope that helps.

p.s. you can buy dipsticks on the internet and test your urine and then get antibiotics if you need them. The above self diagnosis is for just now when you can't get to the doctors or get the dipsticks.

Sunhatweather · 30/07/2024 07:07

Could be. Grab some cystitis powder from the pharmacy and then make sure to drink lots of water over the next couple of days. No need to jump straight to antibiotics.

The tiniest amount of wee is coming out but I have this constant strong urge to wee, as in it aches around my genitals like I’ve been desperately holding it in. There was the tiniest bit of blood when I wiped just now but I’m mid cycle so definitely not period related.

Most likely. Just go to the pharmacy.

Wtf?
Do not take this advice @Redwineandcheeseplease01 . Go to a pharmacist

Leaving a UTI untreated can lead to a worsening of infection so I would seek review and treatment if necessary. My teenage daughter has scars on both kidneys from UTIs so it does warrant further action. Try drinking a couple of glasses of water and see if this helps. Some times the discomfort can pass in which case probably not a UTI. If not then organise review.

spikeandbuffy · 30/07/2024 07:35

That's the symptoms I always get, I never get any burning

Munchyseeds2 · 30/07/2024 07:41

Sounds like a UTI to me.
As far as I'm concerned, the sooner you start antibiotics the better

Bloops · 30/07/2024 07:49

If you're in the UK, you can do a Boots or Superdrug online doctor and pick up a prescription for UTI, sometimes on the same day. That's always my back up because getting through to my GP is hell.

Mrsjayy · 30/07/2024 07:52

Go to a pharmacy this morning they can give antibiotics or get the cystitis powder meanwhile drink loads. It probably is an infection.

Redwineandcheeseplease01 · 30/07/2024 08:00

Do you think given the small amounts of blood when I’m wiping that I need to see a GP for antibiotics or will a Boots trip cover it?

Yes of course I did say this was only if she wanted to try and diagnose herself whilst waiting to see a doctor/medical professional.

I had tons of UTI's. When I started to get symptons it sometimes turned out to be just cystitis and I didn't need antibiotics.
The difference was always the smell of my urine. If I wasn't sure I could actually tell by doing this as I became a bit of an expert. I know it sounds mad but I promise you the bacteria makes your urine smell whereas if it's just cystitis with no bacteria, your urine even if cloudy won't smell.

I got tired of going to the doctors every week with another UTI and so I started to recognise when I was getting one and needed antibiotics and when it was just cystitis and it would pass on its own.

I did recommend the dipsticks as well!

Well it's up to you really if there Is blood I'd maybe phone the gp first to see what they say.

Musicaltheatremum · 30/07/2024 08:28

@Redwineandcheeseplease01 certainly in Scotland the pharmacy won't treat if blood they'll refer you to your GP. It's not unusual to get blood with UTI but pharmacists have different guidelines for treating.

Redwineandcheeseplease01 · 30/07/2024 09:26

Been to the GP and got antibiotics, thanks for all your replies xx

Hope the antibiotics have you feeling better soon! You might want to try a half teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in water to help the stinging - avoid booze, coffee and citrus - take the whole course of ABs even if you feel better - and ibuprofen can help the inflammation.

Good luck! 🙂

Hoardasurass · 30/07/2024 09:58

If you have blood in your urine see a dr asap
