Please help.

My son is 4, turning 5 in a few months since the age of one he's been under certain services for development and other issues. It was clear from a young age that he was a bit different that other children he really struggles socially and emotionally. A few months back he was finally referred to neurodivergent team and I'm still waiting on appointments, but over the past few months his behaviour is becoming out of control. He's all over the place, cannot control his hyperactivity, he screams, kicks, hits out, no matter how many time you try to explain something to him it just goes in one ear and out the next. We are stressed, unsure how to handle the behaviours. Up until now his additional needs was much more sensory related he's never behaved this bad. Advice is much appreciated.

Sounds like ASD, ADHD with a PDA profile / or maybe oppositional defiant. Look into low demand parenting and think about what is causing his anxiety. If you lower the anxiety and reduce the number of triggers, the lashing out may reduce. Look for support from parenting groups for kids with these difficulties. It does get better. You will see a change come 7/8, but for the time being you may have to change your approach to parenting and discipline.

Have you seen a sensory occ therapist for them to assess and suggest ways to help his sensory needs, as that’s likely to be impacting on his behaviour in general.

Does he have an EHCP in place?
