Hand hold please - hand foot and mouth

I got hand foot and mouth from my baby. Baby seems to be doing better now but oh man, it is awful.

Anyone had it as an adult? Tell me how it progressed through for you and when did it get better. I’m on day 3 from the point of first symptom which was painful throat.

Having to look after another little person makes it more difficult.

Oh I feel for you. Myself and my husband had it as adults and it was awful. The pain in my hands and feet made me sleep with ice packs for two nights and the skin peeled off them twice. My husband had so many blisters in his mouth and throat he couldn't eat or drink properly. I think it took a good week to get over it.

WoodenTree · 26/07/2024 15:01

Yes, I can’t eat, the throat looks a mess, can’t walk really and last night was just awful. Did the intensity of the symptoms get somewhat better even earlier than the week - if you remember?

My kids very generously gave it to me a couple of weeks ago! I only had a couple of blisters on my feet and a couple on my hands and arm, but I had a really bad sore throat (presumably blisters in there?!). I just felt a bit under the weather with it, achy, tired and itchy. Didn't last very long thankfully.

Moll98 · 26/07/2024 15:20

Yeah, I had it off my toddler last week. Tiny blisters on my fingers and feet that was surprisingly painful. And one mouth ulcer under my tongue. The mouth ulcer only hung round for a day, the blisters on my hands and feet maybe just under a week. It was all very mild, not sure how ill I felt because I'm pregnant and feel like crap anyway but it wasn't too bad.

WoodenTree · 26/07/2024 15:28

@Moll98 glad it was quite mild for you. Just what you want when pregnant!

I think after about 4 days the worst was over. Try difflam spray from the pharmacist for your throat, that helped.

WhatMe123 · 26/07/2024 15:41

Oh god it's awful as an adult, sorry I can't lie. Have you got the blisters on your hands and feet? I honestly was putting my hands in the freezer to kill the burning pain. I feel for you op it's awful. Eat ice lollies for your throat and lots of cold things for your hands. You'll start to get better by day 4/5 I think

Yep, blisters both on hands and feet, and ulcers in the mouth and throat. It’s sooo painful all round.

A bit dramatic with a hand hold :)

I had it as an adult and actually never ever heard of it until two years ago! We never head it as kids and my Mum and aunt has never heard of it either, so I was the first in the fmaily to experience it.

I didnt have it too bad, I had a few small blisters on my hands and feet but I guess I had it a bit mild, it was not very pleasant and my hands felt quite sore, but it also went away pretty quickly.

mammabing · 26/07/2024 16:02

I had it a few weeks ago. The throat pain was definitely the worst. Ate lots of yoghurt as that didn’t seem to hurt as much but if you can get some throat spray it really helps. My main symptoms got better after day 5. Days 3 and 4 were the worst. I still have some blisters on my hands and feet but they’re not painful anymore.

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 26/07/2024 16:12

My twins had it. Nary a symptom - just a few blisters.

I was SO ill with it. It hurt to breathe I had that many blisters in my mouth.

CharlieRight · 26/07/2024 16:14

Had it last year from DS, horrible experience. About 4 days of throat pain, lived on ice cold avocado smoothies. DW also had it but was vaccinated As a child and didn’t suffer so much.

One of the reasons I won't accept children in to my childminding setting with HFM. It's horrible as an adult. My teenage son also caught it and was ill with various symptoms for a month.

I hope you feel better soon.

That sounds awful. My throat is bad but thankfully not that bad.
