To think we need to start a REAL HUMAN movement before it's too late?

I don't know if anyone else is alarmed by AI and how it's going to put so many pp out of work, render many industries obsolete, create deep fakes of women, politicians, doctors etc, make it impossible to know what to trust in the internet etc.

I'm 59, so grew up in a world without the internet. I'm not a Luddite, and there's lots of great things about what we can do now thanks to the internet, but I feel like we're about to enter an era where we are potentially going to lose so much, and are sleepwalking into a future where we as individuals are at risk of losing so much, and once it's gone, it's going to be almost impossible to get it back.

We saw it a bit during lockdown, for example, older pp not being able to order a drink in a pub unless they'd downloaded an app, so many places now not accepting cash, certain individuals not having access to their bank accounts, Uber, pp being banned from FB,Twitter etc

You may have no sympathy with Nigel Farage or Andrew Tate, but it doesn't take much these days for anyone to be accused of ' wrongthink ' ( and a very prominent feminist campaigner has been banned from many platforms just for being uncompromising about biological reality )

I fear that a social credit system could be easily brought in ( if pp were scared enough and thought it was for their own safety )

I don't know what the answer is, pp may think I'm crazy and paranoid, but I do think it's worth a discussion, before we all become boiled frogs...

If it works, it will end social mobility permanently, which I assume is why the rich and powerful are so keen on it. But - having spent two hours on the phone to Sky whilst they tried and failed to understand and fix the weird messages it was displaying, my view is it is highly unlikely to work. AI doing surgery - who is going to consent to that? You're halfway through and computer says no? And everyone knows how woeful customer service is - it's going to be a million times worse when you have to make yourself understood by AI. Everything that humans make can and will break. It's a pipedream.

Interesting point although I do you mean Kelly Jane Keen? She's a pretty awful person.

AI in terms of its data analytics ability scares me and that will come first. We're already absorbed with apps, online shopping, online banking, fitness apps. Imagine something that can follow and analyse everything you do in seconds. That's a lot of personal information. Quantum computing is going to put internet security under huge pressure too. I'm increasingly feeling my inner Luddite beginning to rebel...

You’re not wrong, but I’m not sure what, if anything, can be done about it now - it’s already too late.

The technology exists and is out in the world, which means it can and will be used to wreak havoc by those with malign intent, and that corporations and wealthy individuals who have a financial interest in its continued development will throw a spanner into any efforts to regulate its use.

Legislation will not only rely on governments being quick to act (unheard of) but also to cooperate and coordinate internationally (not gonna happen). The bloke who invented Chat GPT warned about the potentially catastrophic dangers of unregulated AI ages ago, but even at that time it was a bolted horse, stable door situation. It’s frankly terrifying but here we are.

Private corporations banning people for repeatedly breaking the terms of service is a completely different matter than the rise (and abuse) of AI.

I'm a bit confused. What do you mean by social credit system? Like a government facilitated blacklist?

Many people are concerned about a cashless society. I've read the Handmaids Tale and know where that leads!

Wrong think has been going on since the invention of social media. People have been sacked because of opinions or photos on Twitter etc

Can you explain why she's a pretty awful person?

EmeraldRoulette · 21/07/2024 01:17

@Appalonia It is far, far too late for that.

And posters who raised it here a few years ago were ridiculed and labelled conspiracy theorists, even though anyone with a tiny tiny acquaintance with tech could see what was going on. I am very non-techie and I could see what was going on in 2017 I think it was?

Expressing a wish that trans people be denied employment and housing simply because they are trans doesn't really marry with the notion that it's all about protecting women's rights, and not just about ostracising and removing rights from trans people.

So you think the world was going to have the basics on the internet and then stop, I am not sure if it is naivety or what but the human race as whole has created what we have

Without the internet we wouldn't be on talking about the internet
