DH sits in silence

It's making me mad. When we met he was at least making small talk with people. Now he just sits there, usually scrolling on his phone. I find it so rude. Tried saying it politely, involving him in the conversation but just get a monosyllabic answer. When he's in the mood he'll make small talk with people, and if it's his friends or his family he is on top form. I'm at my wits end.

You mean he does this when you're out with friends/at dinner etc? But doesn't sit in silence with his own friends?

So he is happy to talk to his family and friends but not yours? Does he scroll on his phone when he's with your parents because he's being incredibly rude.

Do you think he is being passive aggressive? Could he be resentful over something and acting out?

Which people do you mean? Are they friends who you are out socialising with? If so go out with friends without him. I wouldn’t be impressed if anyone was scrolling on their phone when out for the evening.

My ex husband used to do this. It’s very rude

A friend’s husband does this. It’s so infuriating and I’ve reduced spending time with them as a result. It’s so disrespectful.

I had an Ex who did this, and the reality was they just weren't much of a conversationalist and didn't have anything particularly interesting to contribute in any case.

Wasn't always the case, but we'd both changed as people and had nothing much in common. The only difference is I consider whipping the phone out in company the height of ignorance, whereas they thought it was perfectly ok to do so. One of the reasons they are an Ex.
