My DD2 just went under in pool very briefly

She was sitting on the step and fell in. I know how terrible that is. We were right there.

She was probably in the water for 5 seconds.

She cried when I plucked her out but she didn't even cough up any water.

She was just a bit upset from the shock. But after around a minute just stated playing normally.

Is she ok or do I need to take her somewhere ?

I know dry drowning can be a concern.

If she was ok after I wouldn’t take her any where? Is she a baby?

SoupDragon · 19/07/2024 10:36

Why is it terrible? You fished her out promptly.

How old is she? When they are young they have a very good dive reflex so won't take a breath underwater.

She’s fine. Please invest in baby swim. It will stop your child from drowning

TaupeRobin · 19/07/2024 10:36

Was not spluttering when she came up? Probably means her mouth was closed and she didn’t have chance to inhale.

Wentie · 19/07/2024 10:37

Depends how old she is. 2 weeks? Not great. 4 years, she’ll be fine.

advicedo · 19/07/2024 10:37

She's 2. She was under for a few seconds before I fished her out. It's just never happened before.

It didn't seem like she'd swallowed water but we can't be sure.

It won't stop a child from drowning. It will just give them a better chance of not drowning. Which, obviously, isn't a bad thing but you shouldn't get complacent.

MrBigsCat · 19/07/2024 10:39

By the way you haven’t done anything terrible or even wrong, kids wanting to sit and play in water is totally normal and you were right there - a lesson learnt about water that’s all. She sounds fine now

It happens - Just keep an eye on her in case she feels unwell later.

It's very rare.

Thanks. I'm just reading up on the difference between secondary drowning and dry drowning.

It was so scary to see her sinking, like a stone. Terrifying.

I have been paranoid about this in the past and they have always been fine. That link a PP shared is pretty helpful and reassuring.

OrwellianTimes · 19/07/2024 10:45

She will be fine - she was under for seconds, didn’t cough up water.

I know it’s scary - but you were there keeping an eye on her. Ice cream and lots of cuddles.
