Caravan Dreaming Teacher Summer with Kids

I've always wanted a VW transporter, brand new, top spec. I thought it would be great fun with little kids in the summer hols but also day trips. Sadly life is not panning out with the required budget!

I could however buy a 20+ year old partially functioning caravan!

AIBU to think the rainy summer were currently having is the perfect time to buy a not very pretty caravan for summer adventures?

Any caravaning advice also very welcome!

I love caravanning, but only cos my other half does all the practicalities. If you're good at practical things and don't mind getting your hands dirty then go for it. You need a car suitable for towing the weight of your caravan, also you need somewhere to store it , sometimes there are covenants to say you can't keep it on your drive especially on newer build estates. There are lots of vloggers on you tube documenting their travels, have a look and follow some. We have an older caravan and there's always something that needs mending or sorting lol, if you have the patience and nous to suss out problems and then deal with them it's a lovely way to see the country cheaply.
For instance in the last couple of years we've had a flat tyre, a leaky tap , broken window catch, blown fuse on the heating, gas bottle needing changing, fridge seal not working, it's little things like that on an old caravan, that's not to say you wouldn't get problems with a newer one, there's more technical stuff to go wrong with them good luck .

I've considered it, but unless you can use it year round, the economics don't stack up vs. renting a cheap static for a couple of weeks; plus my anxiety would be through the roof towing one (and we'd need to buy a more powerful car, which would increase our overall car running costs )
