To say something, breach of GDPR?

I’m on a learners course at the minute via zoom. The tutor is sharing their screen and accidentally clicked on the full names of all the learners. Then their emails kept coming into the side of the screen. A few of the learners post codes kept popping up along with their names and a couple of phone numbers. Then an email was showing that said the full name of a learner and that she’d pulled out as she’d had a family bereavement. This is a course relating to working in a school. As part of this cause we’ve done a unit on GDPR and how schools and colleges have to protect everyone’s personal information. Surely this is. A breach of said GDPR

Then the tutor was typing in something to get a link that he could send us and in the previously searched bit showed a sexual health clinic that he had searched for so everyone saw it whilst he was sharing the screen

Yes, flag it!

She* and thank you. It is quite bad to say we’ve even learnt about it on the course

That's hilarious

Yes I'd raise it to the overall course leader. Showing full names isn't great but accidents happen, showing email addresses, phone numbers and postcodes is bad, showing the email from another student is pretty unforgivable. This should be dealt with by the training centre.

DontBiteTheCat · 12/07/2024 20:37

Is there any chance all of that was staged to see who’d been listening on the GDPR part of the course?

That’s a lot of fuck ups to make if not!

Oxo01 · 12/07/2024 20:38

Didn't anyone point this out to the person at the time ?

StormingNorman · 12/07/2024 20:40

I would mention it to the tutor. Sounds like a fuck up to be fair, rather than an intent to share information. She probably didn’t realise you could see all her emails.

I agree that it sounds like a mistake, but it's unprofessional and the tutor needs some training on how to use or rather not use zoom! It's also dodgy she was using her work machine to look up sexual health clinics. Unless as a PP suggested it was deliberate!

That's what I was thinking..

Pink167 · 12/07/2024 21:27

I would have thought that but it didn’t all happen on the same day! I just meant that we did a unit on GDPR so they’ve been teaching it us but other about 3 days out of a week or so we’ve been seeing peoples emails and postcodes

I think she works from home so it’s her personal computer linked to work emails but even so

I would be reporting this personally, to the programme leader or equivalent. Would have made sense if it was deliberate but I’ve seen you said it’s happened over a period of time. I think it’s right to report :)
