AIBU or is my DH?

Caught eldest, upper primary, swapping 'your Mum' insults with his younger brother (two years younger) a few days ago. They clearly have no context of the implications of the insult, given I am the mother of both.

I find this insult deeply misogynistic and unacceptable and had hoped we'd got past that type of thing, and I want to impress that on my sons. My husband thinks I'm being completely over the top and it's just a playground 'thing' and always has been.

It may have been around for a long time, but it's still highly misogynistic and demeaning to women.

I'd be utterly furious. And sad that I'd married a chump.

Sounds like DH needs educating as well as your boys OP.

I'd be cross too but only if you'd already told them that 'jokes like that were unacceptable

Playground insults may always have been a 'thing' but many of them are no longer acceptable in this day and age.

I would simply sit your children down and calmly explain why you found their 'jokes' offensive.

I would have piled in and said my piece to both of them as soon as I heard it, and made sure they knew I wasn't happy.

And I would have said the same to my DH if he wasn't backing me up.

Doireallywanttodothis · 12/07/2024 15:40

Oh, I've told them it's completely unacceptable, why, and that I don't expect to hear that from them again (or for them to use it at school).

DH was fine with that but felt I was being a bit OTT. Which is very unlike him normally - hence the AIBU.

Your DH's correct, but he's BU..

It is play ground talk...which needs a stop putting to.

You ANBU in telling them exactly in which way you feel best.
