Interestingly I saw someone posting online about this a few days ago, I’m glad the Guardian have picked this up. If the candidates are real it will be easy enough to prove but if they’re fake this is electoral fraud surely.

What?!!

hollyblueivy · 09/07/2024 06:38

Surely there is a checking process, conviction check, ID, right to work, reference, proposer - something to ensure all is above board ????

Overthebow · 09/07/2024 06:39

If not then the election results were compromised? What happens then?

bergamotorange · 09/07/2024 06:42

I saw this story, it's a serious allegation. Should be easy to investigate and resolve though, presumably the Electoral Commission and Police can review if necessary. Shouldn't need to come to that, because the party will have all the info so could just make it known.

You need ten local proposers but that is pretty much it.

It is important that people are free to stand in elections to prevent those in power suppressing opponents.

And the proposers have to be real (in that they have to be people listed on the electoral register) but no one checks that it was really them that signed unless there's a reason to, ie someone alleges fraud and so it gets looked into. It wouldn't be the first time if it turned out that the alleged proposers had no idea they were listed as such, though in the other cases I can think of the candidates were definitely real people!

That's shocking - I've had to show my passport, ID, right to work and seek references for a volunteering post and this is for a nearly £100k job contributing to running the country!!!!
