To ask if anyone else has been wiped out by a sore throat recently?

About a week and a half ago, I had quite a sore throat, snotty, and tickly cough (which I caught from DD). And - Sorry, TMI - but when I blew my nose it was very green 🤢

I didn’t feel too bad, no worse than having a bad cold, the worst bit was the sore throat. It’s pretty much gone now other than the odd cough here or there but the past few days I’ve felt so tired. I’ve been needing to nap during the day and go to bed really early. I do regular strength training but haven’t been able to do any at all.

Anyone else had this? DD didn’t seem to feel tired with it and Covid tests for both of us were negative.

Yes! I've had exactly what you've described. Two weeks on and I still have a sore throat and I wake up each morning with such a dry, awful mouth. I was convinced it was tonsilitis but it wasn't.

blackandgold88 · 06/07/2024 21:25

I’ve had a sore throat off and on for months 😩 the glands in my neck are massive and nothing seems to make it go away! It definitely gets worse when I’m working late shifts or in an air conditioned environment. Hot drinks and sleeping with several pillows propping me up are the only things that seem to work. Paracetamol doesn’t touch the sides!

This is grim. Not recently but last year, exactly the same as you. Horrible sore throat for about 12 days, bright green snot coming out in bucketloads and a chesty cough that sounded like I had a 40 a day habit. Was so so horrible and had to struggle through work.

noexcusesforlatenessalan · 06/07/2024 21:28

Me and DP both had this approx six months ago. Covid tests negative but the worst sore throats and general exhaustion/ body aches. I still have a lingering sore throat some times. There are some very resistant viral bugs around I reckon.

Createausername1970 · 06/07/2024 21:28

Not had the green nose goo, but I had a niggly sore throat on and off for a week or two, then last week I was dead on my feet. Completely drained, mentally fatigued, couldn't think straight, even thinking about which way to load the dishwasher was a trial.

I ended up sleeping most of last weekend. Last night I slept for 9 hours solid, but today I feel so much better, much more mentally alert.

kardashianklone · 06/07/2024 21:29

Yes I had this two weeks ago, it turned out to be laryngitis and I totally lost my voice and had to go on vocal rest.

Clueless2000 · 06/07/2024 21:39

Wow, sounds like it’s definitely a thing at the moment then!
My sore throat was only bad for a few days - when I woke in the morning and swallowed for the first time, it was making me wince. It’s a tiny bit dry now but that’s it really.
Any tips for the tiredness? Just sleep a lot and let it run its course??

Just came to say I had it too a few weeks ago. Sooo weird. Pre-covid I don't remember having so many strange illness, like this one. But maybe that's just a coincidence.

Clueless2000 · 06/07/2024 21:48

Thanks @BananaPalm
It is weird, isn’t it? If I’d been really ill with it, I could understand the tiredness but I just don’t feel I was ill enough to now feel this wiped out!

I have this right now! It's awful. This is week two and it feels like it is getting a bit better now.

Clueless2000 · 06/07/2024 21:53

Hope you feel better soon @gocompare
Sounds like I got off relatively lightly!

I do. Sore throat, sore ear and absolutely exhausted. Hope everyone feels better soon!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 06/07/2024 21:58

Yeah my dd (18yo) has had this, she seems to have a really sore throat for a few days which then gets better only to come back a few days later. Her dr said laryngitis as well.

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 06/07/2024 22:00

I've had the same.

Started with earache last Sunday. Sore throat Monday - had an afternoon nap which is unusual.

Glands up in neck on Tuesday , throat felt like swallowing shards of glass. Lost voice, sense of taste and smell. Again, fell asleep during the day.

Coughing on Wednesday which is particularly painful because of sharpness in throat. Sweating profusely and feeling cold.

Slept most of Thursday and Friday. Still tired today. Don't usually get a cough but I've a feeling this one could turn nasty. Tested for Covid - negative.

I know this reads like Solomon Grundy.

LeonoraFlorence · 06/07/2024 22:01

I fell asleep this afternoon too which is unheard of!

Chouette77 · 06/07/2024 22:14

I've had the same. Worse than Covid which I had a while back. The tiredness is just horrible.

ShaunaSadeki · 06/07/2024 22:19

DD has had bacterial tonsillitis, she is pretty hardy but was really poorly, she couldn’t swallow so we had trouble even giving her pain relief and she was falling asleep which is unlike her. In the end we went to the GP who prescribed antibiotics and she was so much better the next day and back to being a gobby teenager and answering back with withering looks within 36 hours

ru53 · 06/07/2024 22:22

We’ve just had this too, also tested negative for covid. Been ill for a week so far!

spikeandbuffy · 06/07/2024 22:23

Yes. Started shivering sat at my desk, took my temp which was 40c
Ended up at the GP who did the usual "maybe it's viral" (I've never had viral tonsillitis) looked in my throat, backed off rapidly and gave me antibiotics
Was back 48hrs later as I remembered last time penicillin didn't work and by this point my throat was totally white. Got another antibiotics and finally cleared it but was off work for 10 days

rightoguvnor · 06/07/2024 22:24

Poor DD's work rota has just changed and she has the first full weekend off work for many months - only to wake this morning with a humdinger of a throat full of razor blades. Can hardly talk.
Now I've been coughing for the last couple of hours as though I've a fish bone stuck in me throat only I haven't eaten fish.

Clueless2000 · 06/07/2024 22:30

I hope we all feel better soon!

Yes got it at the moment. Started Thursday evening with a very sore throat, I’m sneezing constantly and everything feels so tickly, my throat, nose and ears. My chest feels like it’s on fire. Sore throat isn’t the worst bit anymore but it still hurts, it’s more the constant I’m about to sneeze feeling and the chest. I’m very wheezy.

oOiluvfriendsOo · 06/07/2024 22:36

Going on 5 weeks now.
Started as a runny nose, then a constant cough and awful sweats.
Then a chest infection and really sore ribs from all the coughing.
Had antibiotics which helped to clear it I thought but it returned 2 weeks later.
Firstly with pain on the other side of my ribs. Whenever I coughed or sneezed or moved the pain was awful but then came the spasms in the muscles between my ribs......oh the pain, I've never experienced anything like it.
Still in pain but no spasms so hopefully on the mend.
