What is this noise?

I normally have my window open at night (hot flashes due to pregnancy). I heard what sounded like a toddler crying. Was worried it was my neighbours’ child but being 11pm thought it was odd/unlikely. I know foxes sound like babies but I would bet my house this was human. Also concerned it was a cat fight.

We live on the edge of town and do get foxes.

What is this sound? Sent to husband and he says it’s foxes. So disturbed.

I know recording and uploading to YouTube is bonkers but I need to know!

It’s a cat in heat

Hermittrismegistus · 04/07/2024 00:10

Sounds like a cat in heat calling to the males

Polir · 04/07/2024 00:13

That would make sense. It’s really pissing my dog off!

Never knew cats made those sorts of sounds. Thanks both.

Yes, cat in heat.

At least it’s only periodic. When I lived on the edge of a wood, the owls were constant. I would lie there are 3 am thinking ‘I hate wildlife…’

KnickerlessParsons · 04/07/2024 00:13

Cat.

Do neutered female cats go into heat? I would have assumed all my neighbours would have spayed their pet

Definitely cats

nougatcougar · 04/07/2024 00:17

I have woken up to this exact noise. Urban area but plenty of foxes. Not a fox though I think, I hear plenty of those and it's different.
So I've caught it a couple of times and looked out the window to see 2 naughty cats that are often encroaching on my garden "singing".
I have a male and female cat, both spayed. I had assumed the 2 naughty cats were unneutered males (fat faces) but you are saying this is a female cat in heat?

Cats can roam for many miles. It won't just be your neighbour's cats in your local area.

Polir · 04/07/2024 00:18

Hope it’s not a stray. Mystery solved.

Very chilling noise

My cats said that's a cat.

RogueFemale · 04/07/2024 00:21

Cat fight. Normal noise. Fear not.

RogueFemale · 04/07/2024 00:24

When cats encounter each other encroaching on a territory, it starts off with the yowling, doesn't necessarily end up in a fight. There's the yowling and they assess each other and either one of them flees or it ends in a physical fight. Mostly it's just the yowling and one of them runs away.

RogueFemale · 04/07/2024 00:26

The noise of an actual cat fight is very different! Louder and more frenetic yowling and screeching.

Floatlikeafeather2 · 04/07/2024 00:39

It doesn't sound at all like a female cat calling. It's a cat stand-off. If you listen carefully, you can hear another cat a bit further from the microphone.

Icequeen01 · 04/07/2024 08:08

It's the start of a cat fight, it's when they start puffing themselves up and siding up to each other. I have owned cats for over 40 years and when I hear that noise I always go running out of our front door to break up the fight before it starts. I've had a few vet visits as my boys are big but softies and always get picked on. Neutered/spayed cats fight too over territories.

This. It did sound like a baby/toddler at first, but that is 100% cat.

FloofPaws · 04/07/2024 08:15

Definitely cat

Dery · 04/07/2024 08:18

Yep - cat.

Good that you know about the sound foxes make. I remember hearing that for the first time as a teenager (fewer urban foxes back then) and thinking someone was being murdered.

BobandRobertaSmith · 04/07/2024 08:18

Definitely a cat!

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 04/07/2024 08:20

My dog is now very upset 🤣
