New carpet

Prefaced to say I know this is a real first world problem.

After a fiasco and a half, we have had our new landing and a bedroom carpet replaced and refitted today due to pre-existing damage. I don't know if I'm being completely picky and precious, but it just doesn't match the other carpet that's been down for 6 months despite apparently being the same colour.

The older carpet has a pink undertone, but the new one has a definite brown one, most visible when going from landing onto the stairs.

I was so hoping it would be the end of my carpet woes today but I'm completely gutted. I've gone back to them just now and they're coming back out to inspect next week, but I'm right aren't I?

Fabric comes with a batch number. You check this if you buy more fabric and need it to match the existing fabric exactly. Carpet might be the same? If so ask about the batch number of the carrot. If this system exists for carpet then the shop should have noted this when you bought the carpet. Or can check what batches were in stock when you did your order. Check your receipt in case this reference is there.

Are you just seeing and comparing the two in different day light? I think it all looks lovely btw

I don't think it's the light - I thought it may be that one in 6 months older so therefore may have lightened but I don't think it's that as it should be colourfast. I think that there must just be a slight difference in dye batches, but didn't think about that when I agreed to the partial replacement.

I actually love both of the colours individually, but I just want the carpets to flow onto each other without a colour difference!

It's definitely different - I hope they can sort it for you! What was the pre-existing damage - do you mean the carpet was faulty/damaged when delivered? If so it really should be their responsibility to put this right, but whether they'll agree I don't know 😕

They're also layed in perpendicular directions to each other, which may make a difference to how light is reflected /refracted off the surface. A bit like when you get a car door resprayed - at some angles and lighting it looks fine, others it looks totally different.

Can you take a photo looking straight down at the area they meet, ideally with and without a flash / light source directly above?

My gut feeling is that its a combination of different aging, different laying directions and possibly a difference in the bathces of carpet.

Namenamchange · 29/06/2024 11:27

Is it because it’s laid a different directions, so the under tone is more obvious one way.

totallyfrusted · 29/06/2024 11:28

as pp said to match exactly both carpets would have needed to come from the same dye batch.

it also looks like they’ve been laid with the weave going in different directions so you are seeing the loop pile / design from different directions as the new and old carpet meet which could also be causing the slight difference in colour.

sunshinelollipopz · 29/06/2024 11:52

Thanks all. The different weave direction is because of the room size/window position I believe and I'm fine with that so if that's exacerbating it I'd prefer that then a vastly difference in dye batch.

It's wool loop and I think the pile has flattened in the older carpet making it less dark in between which might also improve the new carpet appearance as it flattens too in time.

I think it's definitely different but if it dulls down and isn't visible unless properly looking then I'd be happy enough, it's been such a ball ache from start to finish and I just want to stop worrying about it now

I’d be the same OP. Such nice carpet though x

Update: the manager came out and agreed, said he'd try to replace the runner and bedrooms - not enough carpet available and left it with no resolution and he's now ignoring my emails. I just want the carpet I paid for!!!
